Ice Cream Cones
Ice-cream cones are yet another example of necessity leading to invention. They were invented on a hot summer afternoon of 1904, when an ice-cream vendor, Charles Menches, ran out of the paper plates in which the ice-cream was normally sold. Not wanting to lose business, Menches looked around for some substitute.
In a nearby stall, he saw a Syrian friend selling a crisp wafer-like pastry from Middle-East, Zalabias, which is sold with syrup. Menches borrowed some Zalabias from his friend, and used them as the dish for serving ice-creams. The customers liked the idea of buying ice-cream in a dish which could also be eaten. And thus, the ice-cream cones were invented.
