Pnematic Tyres
John Dunlop, the inventor of pneumatic tyres, was a veterinary surgeon. He invented tyres, because his son had refused to ride cycles. Cycles in those days had no cushion around the rims of the wheels, and on the rough roads of the day, were somewhat painful to ride. In fact, they were called "bone-shakers".
When his son refused to touch these uncomfortable contraptions, Dunlop started thinking about how to make them smoother to ride. One day, while working in his chamber, it occurred to him that he could fix the surgical tubes around the wheel and fill them with air. This would provide a padding, and mitigate the bumps.
Of course, people who knew about cycles told him that it was a useless idea. Dunlop, nevertheless, went ahead with his insight. He used surgical tubes to wrap around the wheel, filled them with air, and sealed them.
