  • Disovery of Teflon

One of the industrial inventions of our times, which revolutionised the kitchenware, is Teflon - the coating which makes them non-sticking. Interestingly, it was discovered due to an accident which happened in the lab of Du Pont company.

During one his experiments, a Du Pont researcher noticed that the pressure in the reaction vessel dropped to zero unexpectedly. Since this was an unplanned occurrence, the researcher became curious as to what would have happened to the material inside. Unable to get the resulting solid product out of the reaction vessel, he sawed it open In the process, of course, he destroyed an expensive piece of equipment. But inside was something far worth more, the substance that became Teflon.
