Typewriter
Christopher Sholes, the inventor of the typewriter, was a newspaper editor. Like many others, he wanted to create a "writing machine" which would make the task of authors and editors easier. It was while watching a pianist performing, Sholes got his inspiration. Just like each key of the piano sounds one note, he reasoned, each key of a "writing machine" can be used for writing one letter.
Based on this idea, he arranged a set of key, and attached them to levers, which would cause metal letters to strike a roller. Developing this idea into a perfectly working typewriter, of course, took hard work. It took Sholes seven years to perfect the machine, which he did in 1868.
