Though Anakin Skywalker was the Chosen One, a being of unrivalled power prophesied to bring balance to
the Force, he lived as a slave for almost his entire life, saved only at his very end by the goodness that resided deep inside the monster he had become.
He grew up on Tatooine, raised by his mother but owned by the slaver
Gardulla the Hutt. Anakin was a special boy - his mother realised that early on - able to do what no other human could do; see things before they happen, fly the fastest podracers without fear...yet he could never pin-point his skills. He just knew he was different. Gardulla lost his slaves to Watto, who, while a fairer owner than the Hutt, still treated Anakin badly, and made him compete in podraces. However, his destiny called, and soon Anakin was on his way to Coruscant with Qui-Gon Jinn, in the hope of training as a Jedi Knight; what he'd always dreamed of doing. He eventually began his training - after helping in the Battle of Naboo by single-handedly destroying the Droid Control Ship orbiting the planet - but his mother was not there to see his sucess; Qui-Gon was forced to leave her behind on Tatooine.
Following ten years of adventures with his Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin was reunited with the woman he swore he would marry when he was just a boy; Padm Amidala, former Queen of
Naboo, now a Senator in the middle of an assassination attempt. Anakin was to be her bodyguard as they travelled - incognito - back to Naboo. However, the Jedi became more than just her protector, and their friendship may have gone further were it not for a message in the Force. Anakin's mother was in pain, so he and Padm set off for Tatooine.
Anakin was too late. His mother died in his arms. Angered, Anakin slaughtered the
Tusken Raiders who had captured Shmi, mercilessly murdering the men, the women and even the children in a cold-blooded, dark side rage. Anakin was slipping further towards darkness. During the Clone Wars, Anakin fought bravely, even challenging Count Dooku himself, but lost his right arm in the process. Once he was given a robotic replacement, Anakin and Padm were wed on Naboo.
Yet the dark side still beckoned. Though Anakin survived the three-year Clone Wars, he was falling further towards the dark side. Finally, he found himself locked in mortal combat with Obi-Wan Kenobi above a fiery pit...and lost, sent tumbling into the flames, his body scarred and burned by the lava. Anakin did not survive. In his place rose a being fuelled by the dark side and a bitter hatred for Kenobi: The embodiment of pure evil...
Darth Vader.

Anakin's immaculate conception has its roots deep in Christianity (with, of course, the other prophecy, Jesus) which angered many fans - though it also left others wondering if Anakin really did have no father...
