Though she was not a Jedi, it seemed the Force was truly strong with her. Born to humble parents in a small mountain village, Padmé began her foray into politics at an early age. She joined the Legislative Youth Program, then served as Theed's supervisor before becoming its Queen. She was not the youngest monarch ever elected, but at only 14, many didn't think Amidala would last long. The pressure was certainly high; soon after her election, the Trade Federation blockaded Naboo to protest against the taxation of trade routes to the Outer Rim. Amidala did as best she could to stop the Federation, but their forces invaded her planet, and she was forced to flee with two Jedi ambassadors. Amidala was not one to run and hide from danger, so - when she found the Senate could not halt the Federation either - she returned to Naboo and retook her planet. She and the others who helped were hailed as heroes, and Amidala stayed on the throne. However, she was forced to step down when her reign was over, but she still wanted to serve the Republic. Amidala joined the Senate as the representative of Naboo, after the previous Senator, Palpatine, had been made Supreme Chancellor. During her time as Queen, Amidala often used decoys to remain undercover during dangerous times. She had many handmaidens who bore striking resemblances to her, and would act as the Queen while she became the handmaiden Padmé Naberrie. However, one such decoy, Cordé, was killed during an assassination attempt on Coruscant. Though she was not happy with the idea, Amidala had to flee the capital for her safety. She was watched over by Anakin Skywalker, but her bodyguard soon became something more. Though Padmé knew her feelings couldn't get in the way of her work, she professed her love just before they were to be executed on Geonosis. They survived, and were wed on Naboo. However, three years on - just after the end of the Clone Wars - Anakin died; consumed by darkness, he became Darth Vader. Padmé was forced to hide with her daughter on Alderaan, while her son was taken to Tatooine. Padmé later died, still beautiful and kind, but sad and broken-hearted. |
