Though she never knew her father, Leia did have a shadowy memory of her mother, whom she remembered as being kind but sad. The reason for this sadness was mostly due to Leia's father - Anakin Skywalker's - turn to the dark side. He became Darth Vader, a person who Leia met many times, but never in anywhere near a friendly, family setting. She was instead raised on Alderaan by Bail Organa, becoming a princess as her mother had once been. However, unlike her mother, Leia did not ascend to the throne; Alderaan was destroyed by the Empire after she was captured and taken onboard the Death Star. Luckily for the soon-to-be-executed Leia, help arrived in the form of Luke Skywalker, who would - four years later - find out he and Leia were twins. At the time, however, Leia harboured a few stronger feelings for Luke, though they were also confused with surprising affections for the cocky scoundrel, Han Solo, who helped rescue Leia from the Death Star. During the evacuation of the Rebel base on Hoth, Leia was forced to escape in Han's ship, where she and the smuggler shared a brief moment of passion while trying to repair the Millennium Falcon's hyperdrive. Still confused about her feelings, Leia accompanied Han to Cloud City, and Solo's friend Lando. However, it was a trap; Darth Vader lay in wait, and ordered Han to be carbon-frozen to test the technology for later use against Luke. Just before Han was frozen, Leia blurted that she loved him, prompting a cocky but affectionate "I know" from Solo. A year later, and Solo was still frozen, hanging as a decoration in Jabba the Hutt's palace. Leia, disguised as a bounty hunter, infiltrated the palace and freed her love, but the two were captured by Jabba. Leia was put in skimpy attire and forced to sit at Jabba's tail, as his slave. When Luke Skywalker staged a rescue out in the Dune Sea, Leia used the chain that bound her to strangle Jabba, before escaping with her friends to the Alliance fleet. She later helped during the Battle of Endor, before expressing her true feelings for Han. Though she almost wed Prince Isolder of Hapes, Leia married Han eight years after they first met. However, Leia didn't have time to settle down and start a family proper; the New Republic seemed to be in constant peril, and Leia found herself entangled more and more in its politics. Though she and Han eventually conceived three Force-strong children, Leia's life was still a busy one - especially with the advent of the Yuuzhan Vong. She is still fighting now, for the causes she has supported all her life, and will continue doing so until the last glimmer of hope fades. |
