A ship doesn't get the accolade of being the 'fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy' - if that can be
called an accolade - without earning the reputation; and the Millennium Falcon has certainly done that, proving time and time again she is just as capable as her pilot.
Heavily modified from the standard YT-1300 freighter it started out as sixty years before the Battle of Yavin, the
Falcon was given many extra upgrades by Han Solo, after he won the ship from Lando Calrissian in a game of sabacc on Bespin. Equipping her with a Class 1.75 hyperdrive and advanced shielding, Han and the Falcon could outrun any Imperial starships that might be taking too close an interest in their activities. However, if it came to a fight, the Falcon was still capable of holding her own; two quad turbolaser turrets were located on top and below of the saucer-shaped body, which could be operated from corresponding turret stations or remotely from the cockpit. Han left in many of the original features, though some were modified;  the topside radar dish, loading ports and flight equipment housed in the cluttered forward mandibles. The cockpit itself is located to the side of the ship, offering an odd perspective, but one Han uses well.
Over the years, Han has given the
Falcon more and more modifications - extra weaponry when the situation demanded it, and even a new coat of paint during the Yuuzhan Vong crisis; a matte black to remove it from the famous Falcon of years previous. As in the days of the Empire, the Falcon saved Han from many dangers with her amazing speed, powerful weaponry and advanced maneuverability - even though the ship was still prone to breaking down at the most inopportune moments...

The original design for the Falcon had to be scrapped after a similar ship appeared in Space: 1999. Instead, the new Falcon design was based off of Lucas' favorite food. Lucas would later say that the Falcon was inspired by a hamburger, with the outrigger cockpit being an olive off to the side
