Blaster pistols are just so
common! For the galactic aristocrat, a chunky DL-44 blaster or an awkward E-11 rifle aren't the blasters to be seen with; the Defender sporting blaster, however, is.
The Defender is the most popular sporting blaster, though MerrSam's Quick 6 is an alternative, though Drearian Defense Conglomerate's blaster pistol is the best choice for most. A short-range pistol used mostly for small game-hunting or as a personal defence weapon, the Defender is often used by those with noble blood. Though it offers less explosive power than a DL-44, the Defender is very affordable - only 350 credits; around 250 cheaper than a common blaster - and require less bureaucratic hassle to obtain. Thus, the sporting blaster became a firm favourite with the cash-strapped Rebel Alliance during the Galactic Civil War. The weapon is made up of relatively unsophisticated components - which can be disassembled with a simple three-digit code if required - and relies on its small power pack for energy rather than usual blaster gas. Only a direct hit with this weapon will afford a kill, which means the user has to make the most of the simple sight on top.
Along with many other members of the Rebellion,
Princess Leia owned a Defender pistol. Trained by the mercenary Giles Durane, Leia developed remarkable accuracy with the weapon at a young age, even though her senatorial duties rarely placed her in the line of fire. By the time her Rebel connections were exposed, Leia had many opportunities to prove how deadly the little weapon could be.
