Packing the power of a heavy rifle into a small sidearm, the DL-44 was common among smugglers and outlaws who would rather shoot first and shoot even more later.
The standard BlasTech DL-44 has a maximum range of fifty meters, and can blow apart a stormtrooper's chestplate from twenty-five. However, such power comes at a cost; the DL-44 consumes energy at four times the rate of a basic blaster pistol, draining a power pack after only twenty-five shots. Thus, the wielder must be careful where they aim, or they may quickly find themselves surrounded without the ability to shoot back. Because of the excessive power consumption, the DL-44's grip has a vibrating 'cautionary pulser' that silently alerts the user when the pack is down to five shots or less. A quick release lever and the power pack's convenient location -immediately in front of the trigger - allows for quick replacement of drained packs. Soldiers bringing heavy blaster pistols into battle normally carry at least a dozen power packs, though most non-military users carry only one spare.
One such owner of a DL-44 was Han Solo, who modified his to provide an excellent sniping ability alongside the base power of the pistol. He attatched a scope to the blaster, and refined the weapon further to make it well-balanced for a fight. Carried in a quick-draw holster, Solo's customised DL-44 was not only deadly but deadly accurate in his hands, and served him well even after his smuggling days gave way for the Rebellion. |
