So it was with Bail Organa, co-founder of the Rebellion, and a strong voice among the enemies of the Empire. Bail Prestor Organa, Viceroy of Alderaan and his homeworld's representative in the Senate, was an influential man, having worked in the Republic and the Rebel Alliance to restore peace to the galaxy. He always strove for harmony on Alderaan, and eventually managed to outlaw all weapons on the planet. Bail was a well-meaning, peaceable Senator, who, even in the corrupt Senate managed to stay above the petty power struggles and greed-fuelled debates in the Republic. He became part of the crumbling Republic's Loyalist Committee, a group devoted to ridding the Galactic Republic of the disease that plagued it. Headed by Chancellor Palpatine, little did Organa know that his group was in fact helping the very man who would bring about the end of the Republic, and impose a terrifying New Order. Bail quickly turned against Palpatine, and along with Mon Mothma and Garm Bel Iblis, founded the Alliance to Restore the Republic. Fearing for their lives, the three resigned their Senatorial duties, and Bail returned to his homeworld, again taking up his position of the planet's ruler. Bail helped orchestrate many Alliance missions from his homeworld, opposing Palpatine whenever he could. Soon after the Clone Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi - who had served Organa during those dark years - sent Anakin Skywalker's wife and child to Alderaan for safekeeping; Anakin had turned to the dark side, and had become Palpatine's servant. Bail hid Padm� and baby Leia on Alderaan, but when Padm� died some years later, Bail became Leia's adoptive father. As she grew up, Leia Organa followed in her father's footsteps and served the Senate - though she also ran missions for the Rebellion when she could. One such mission, to retrieve plans for the Empire's new battlestation, resulted in the destruction of Alderaan. Governor Tarkin, in a mere test of his station's power, destroyed the planet, and Bail himself. Though Organa was gone, the work he had started eventually destroyed Palpatine and his New Order. Bail would have been proud. |
