| PALPATINE Species: Human Born: 65 BE (84 BBY) Birthplace: Naboo Homeworld: Naboo, Coruscant Affiliation: The Sith, Galactic Republic, Galactic Empire Weapon: Force lightning Vehicle: Lambda-class shuttle Debut: The Empire Strikes Back Death: Return of the Jedi Described as the most evil and powerful being in history, with the deaths of the Republic and the Jedi Order credited to him, Emperor Palpatine certainly made an impression in the galaxy. Palpatine started his political career representing his homeworld of Naboo, though the origins of his introduction to the Sith order remains a mystery. By unknown means, he eventually gained the status of Sith Master, as his alter ego, Darth Sidious. Palpatine was by then a senator in the Republic: It was by then that his plans were started. He began manipulating senators and events behind the scenes, while Darth Sidious made direct contact with Nute Gunray of the Trade Federation. After an incident on Eriadu which saw the deaths of all but two of the Trade Federation Directorate, Sidious gained the trust of Gunray. Palpatine caused a debate in the Senate which resulted in the Federation blockading Naboo. Palpatine had also been influencing the royal family on his own planet, and thus had a defenceless world to blockade. However, the Jedi intervened, and the Trade Federation lost...though perhaps that too was part of Palpatine's plans. His infulence in the Senate led to his rise to the office of Supreme Chancellor, yet that was still not enough. He continued his plots, creating a secessionist movement against the Republic, with the help of his new Sith apprentice, Darth Tyranus. He had also ordered the creation of an army for the Republic - posing as Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas - and led the Senate to comission it against the seperatists. The Clone Wars began, all down to Palpatine's schemes. Finally, with opposition to the Republic crushed, and the Jedi Knights depleted, he made his move. Palpatine ordered a state of martial law, and proclaimed himself Emperor. The Republic died, and in its place rose Palpatine's Empire. He shut himself away while he ordered his new organization, killing off threats and promoting loyal followers. He oversaw the elimination of the Jedi - with the help of his third apprentice, Darth Vader - and ordered the construction of a superweapon he had been planning since his Chancellorship. His position seemed totally secure...but even his epic plan had its flaws. Two Jedi had survived his purges, and trained the son of his apprentice to overthrow the tyrannical dictator. With his Death Star destroyed by this new Jedi threat, Palpatine began to grow a little worried. Finally, Luke Skywalker confronted the Emperor onboard his second Death Star. There, Skywalker battled his father, and won. Palpatine tried to kill Luke when he resisted the Emperor's goading, but Vader intervened. In order to save his son, Vader threw Palpatine into a reactor shaft, at the cost of his own life. The Death Star was duly destroyed, and the Empire crumbled. But Palpatine was not dead. He returned in the form of a clone on Byss, protected by his royal guards. He attacked the New Republic with his Imperial fleets, but was driven back. Luke faced him again, but this time Palpatine managed to turn him to the dark side, as he had his father. However, it was Luke's sister who intervened this time, and Palpatine failed again. After more strikes, Palpatine was finally defeated on Onderon. His power drained, and the Emperor's reign of terror was over. |
