Get on the wrong side of him, however, and those words will change to deadly, menacing and powerful - provided you are alive at the time. Dooku was once a great Jedi Knight, having served in the order for almost 70 years. His lightsaber skills - which centered on Form II, considered by many to be too outdated to be of any use in the modern galaxy - were second only to Yoda, though Dooku favoured graceful fencing moves over Yoda's Form IV aerial attacks. In this field he was unrivalled, and became one of the best duellists in the galaxy. Not only was he exceptionally strong with the Force, but he had the brains to go with it too. He often resolved conflicts through negotiation, but over time he began to realise the Jedi were weakening. He believed their failing was to serve a doomed institution as the corrupt Republic, and ten years before the Clone Wars, he left the Jedi Order - shortly after the death of his padawan, Qui-Gon Jinn, an event which many believe was the final straw for Dooku's leaving - becoming one of the infamous 'Lost Twenty'. He promptly disappeared from the public eye. Dooku had returned to his homeworld of Serenno, where a vast fortune waited - a fortune he was forced to abandon when he entered the Jedi Order. He used his wealth to influence others, promoting his views on the crumbling Republic to rally systems to his cause. Sometime after leaving the Jedi Order, Dooku had run into the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, and had become his Sith apprentice. Following Sidious's instructions, Dooku formed a Seperatist movement against the Republic. Within ten years, his Confederacy of Independant Systems had amassed several thousand star systems. He soon had the Trade Federation and the commerce guilds joining, combining their droid armies together to create an unstoppable force. Or so he thought. The Jedi Knights attacked the Confederate world of Geonosis, and while they were soon beaten by thousands of droids, the new Republic Army was not. Dooku was forced to flee as tens of thousands of clonetroopers stormed Geonosis, destroying a large portion of the Confederacy's operations. Dooku retreated to his secret hangar - with plans for a new superweapon for his Master - but was intercepted by Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker. The three fought in vicious lightsaber duels, but the Jedi were no match for Dooku. It was not until Master Yoda arrived that Dooku knew he was beaten. After a fierce confrontation, Dooku distracted Yoda and escaped in his solar sailer. With the Clone Wars underway, Dooku led his forces into battle, though was careful not to expose himself too much. However, in the end, Dooku was killed. Though he had turned towards darkness, the galaxy had lost a powerful and respected figure. |
