TATOOINE Type: Desert Location: Outer Rim System: Tatoo Moons: 2 Natives: Jawas, Tusken Raiders, moisture farmers Languages: Basic, Jawaese Points of Interest: Bestine (capital) Mos Eisley, Mos Espa, Anchorhead, Jundland Wastes, Jabba's Palace Debut: A New Hope A planet that looks like a third sun from outer space doesn't seem like a place anyone would want to call home. However, the dustball of a world had a sizeable population, ranging from native moisture farmers to smugglers and pilots sheltering in one of the planet's spaceports. Tatooine was orbited by twin G1 and G2 suns - named Tatoo I and Tatoo II - explaining why it was so hot. It was thought that rivers had flowed across Tatooine at one point, creating the rocky canyons of the Jundland Wastes, though they dried up millennia ago. Tatooine was first colonized by the crew of the famous Dowager Queen, the wreck of which has become something of a tourist attraction in Mos Eisley. At first the settlers named their discovery the J11.9 system, but the Jawa name for the planet - Tah doo Een e - was later adopted. The smelly, junk-dealing Jawas are not the only natives of Tatooine. The vicious Tusken Raiders, or Sandpeople, call Tatooine home, and are notorious for attacking outlying moisture farms and even Jawa strongholds. Though what little water Tatooine secretes beneath its surface has to be pumped out into moisture vaporators, there are many kinds of native wildlife on the planet - such as the shaggy bantha, the reptillian ronto and dewback, and the small, rodent-like womprat. The planet's human colonists have evolved into the current moisture farmers, though much of Tatooine's population is comprised of passing starpilots or beings visiting to see the local podraces. As was much of the Outer Rim, Tatooine was a lawless world, in the grip of Hutt gangsters and slavers. As the Republic's laws did not exist that far away from the Core, slavery had not been abolished on Tatooine, and smugglers and criminals found it just perfect - a statement many of its natives would definately not agree with... |
