Her family was captured by pirates when she was very young, and sold into slavery. She was passed from owner to owner over nearly three decades before being sold to Gardulla the Hutt on Tatooine. Soon after, she gave birth to Anakin Skywalker, though she did not recall any man participating in the conception. The Jedi Order believed this was the sign that Anakin was the prophesied Chosen One, but in Mos Espa the fact that a slave did not know her son's father was not so extraordinary. Though she loved her son very much, she allowed him to leave her and become a Jedi. It seemed as if Shmi would live the rest of her life alone, but five years later, she met a gruff moisture farmer named Cliegg Lars. Cliegg fell in love with Shmi, and brought her freedom. They married, and lived together on Cliegg's homestead with his son, Owen. Yet more change was to come. Five years on, and Shmi was suddenly captured by a band of Tusken Raiders. Cliegg and the local farmers staged a rescue, but most were killed - Cliegg himself lost a leg in the fight. Shmi was tortured for what seemed like an enternity until finally, her son returned. The hope that she may one day see her precious Anakin again had sustained Shmi through the torture, and now she was finally complete. She died in Anakin's arms, and was buried at the homestead. |
