Mobile phone

Dr Martin Cooper obtained the patent for the first cellular telephone for Motorola in 1975. AT&T Bell Labs in the United States were the first to test a prototype cellular telephone system. But the first commercial cellular telephone system was introduced in Tokyo in 1979.

Beeping handphones may be the bane of urban communities but try thinking of someone you know who doesn't have a mobile phone. From the briefcase-sized ATUR phones, cell phones have shrunk into tiny devices which fit into the palm of your hand.

Other than sending and receiving voice communication, new-fangled mobile phones enable you to send e-mail, access the Internet, even act as personal organisers.
