Lycra

Lycra was invented in 1958 by Dupont. Lycra's use was limited to female intimate wear and hosiery until state-of-the art spinning equipment in 1989 allowed for new innovations and products.

If athletes at the last two Olympics look better than their predecessors, chances are they owe it to Lycra. Unlike nylon which binds, Lycra, also known as spandex, provides comfortable support to garments, enabling athletics to move naturally.

Lycra is now found in most sportswear--from swimsuits and crop tops to compression shorts for better performance. Lycra is now found in normal clothing to give clothes a better fit and less creasing. Ex-US President Bill Clinton even has a Lycra suit.
