Microwave oven

Dr Percy Spencer got the idea for a microwave oven when a candy bar in his pocket melted while he was standing next to a vacuum tube called a magnetron.

The first commercial microwave oven, made by Raytheon Corp in 1947 was 1.6m tall, weighed 340kg and cost US$5,000 Microwaves become common in Western households only in the 1980s.

Who would have thought that an accident in the lab would result in an invention that redefined cooking? These rectangular boxes that cook without using heat are now ubiquitous in most homes.

Microwave ovens have spawned a whole range of supermarket foods--everything from pizzas to popcorn are now microwaveable. Even the most complicated dishes can be prepared in an instant, thanks to the microwave oven.
