Camcorders

Sony introduced a video camera that could also play back and named it the Handycam in 1984. It was the first consumer camcorder.

Video recorders started as huge production-based machines which only a full-grown adult could handle. With Sony's Handycam, home videos became a popular pastime and kids could tote them as easily as adults.

You could play back what you recorded immediately which is almost a must in our immediate-gratification society.

Maybe it started this whole have-to-capture-every-moment-live obsession in our society as well. You can't count the number of camcorder proud parents tote to junior's first school concert nowadays.

And holiday photos? Nah, they're passe. People are showing home videos nowadays.
