Internet

J.C.R. Licklider of MIT developed the "Galactic Network'' concept in 1962 and went on to head the computer research programme at the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa). Darpa, previously known as Arpa, developed the forerunner of the Internet, known as Arpanet.

Mimos offered the first Malaysian Internet Service, Jaring, in 1992.

Arpanet was initially developed to enable researchers in the United States to share supercomputers. Today, the Internet is no longer the exclusive domain of the defence and military sectors. Youngsters the world over use it for more trivial pursuits: to chat, play games, download illegal MP3s.

The Internet has made the world a smaller place, opened up information portals and spawned a whole new cyber culture.

The Internet has been glorified and vilified. The Internet has enabled rural villages to take part in the global economy. The Internet is also used for more sinister purposes--child pornography being one of its more nefarious facets.
