Car air-bags

GM invented air-bags in 1973 and offered it as an option on their Chevrolet models that year. The idea failed to take off then. Chrysler was the first to offer air-bags as standard equipment in their cars in 1988.

They're still not a standard feature on most cars on the road but more and more car-makers are offering them as an option.

While there is some controversy about the advantages of air-bags to people with smaller frames (part of the reason why air-bags haven't caught on here), the newer generation of air-bags vent air even as they inflate, making them safer for use.
