Disposable diapers

Marion Donovan made the first disposable diaper by stuffing shower curtains with absorbent material in 1950.

She called her invention the "Boater.'' But the first truly disposable diapers were made by Pampers in 1961 and consisted of an absorbent core of 15 to 25 layers of tissue paper.

Disposable diapers don't just absorb moisture, they wick moisture away from the skin, keeping babies dry longer. Some even come with indicators to let mums know when the next diaper change is due.

While there are heated debates over how environmentally friendly disposable diapers are, no modern mum is going to give up her disposable diapers without a fight.

Diaper manufacturers are also developing diapers made from biodegradable materials, which would set environmentally-friendly mums at ease.
