Remote controls

The first TV remote control, called "LazyBones'' was developed in 1950. It had a cable that ran to the TV. Wireless TV remotes were only available in 1955. But it wasn't until infra-red technology developed in the 1980s, that remote controls became standard with electrical equipment.

From your car lock to air-conditioners, can you imagine life without remote controls? Coach potatoes owe their existence virtually to them.

If there's one technology item that is plain luxury, this is it. After all, to most of us who are able-bodied, why is walking a few measly steps to the stereo such a chore?

Still, here we are, the clicker generation.
