Making Liqueurs

What is a Liqueur?

Liqueurs are spirits with fruits and/or herbs and spices blended. A blend is the flavor extracted from the fruits, herbs, by steeping them in a base spirit. As such the exact recipe of most Liqueurs are trade secrets. This page will help you to make great tasting liqueurs without paying a great cost. The steps to making a great liqueur is fairly simple and does not take a lot of time or money. I have taken a lot of time in creating and perfecting these recipes and am now passing them onto you..

  • Make a simple sweetener. To make one cup of sugar syrup (1 cup of sugar and 1/2 cup of water) Bring to boil together, let stand a minute or two before adding to anything else. It will yield a little more than one cup, but most recipes are never carefully measured.

  • Put all additives and sweetener in a sterile jar or jug.

  • Pour the spirit (alcohol) in the jar.

  • Seal the jar or jug, let steep in a dark cabinet or closet (unless it requires refrigeration) for a month.

  • Shake the jar or jug from daily, to allow the additives to extract.

  • Filter out the sediment. The additives begin to breakdown in the alcohol and create sediment at the bottom of the jar. The sediment needs to be removed unless you like your liqueurs to look cloudy. The best and inexpensive way to do this is to use a large funnel and a coffee filter. This also requires another sterile jar or jug.

  • Sample the liqueur to see if it needs any sweetening. If it requires any, just make a small batch of the simple sweetener and added it in small amounts until the liqueur has been sweetened to your liking.

  • Seal the jar or jug and age for 5 days.

  • Filter again to make sure it is clear.

  • DRINK AND ENJOY!
