... to my Brewing Absinthe page.
What is Absinthe?
Absinthe is
distilled liquor made with many herbs and spices, the most essential
one being Common Wormwood, (botanical name: Artemisia absinthium).
Wormwood contributes a distinct flavor and a volatile oil containing
thujone, which is reputed to have psychotropic properties (it is very
close to THC). It is not my intent here to preach on the dangers of
wormwood, or to glorify its consumption. The purpose is to inform you
of a safer way to try this historic drink, unless you actually can get
your hand on some of the real stuff.
-
Put all additives
in a sterile jar or jug and top with Alcohol.
-
Seal the jar or
jug, let steep in a dark cabinet or closet for a month.
-
Shake the jar or
jug from daily, to assist in the extraction process.
-
Filter out the
sediment. The additives begin to breakdown in the alcohol and create
sediment at the bottom of the jar, which needs to be removed. The best
and inexpensive way to do this is to use a large funnel and a coffee
filter. This also requires another sterile jar or jug.
-
Seal the jar or
jug and age for 5 days.
-
Filter again to
make sure it is clear.
-
DRINK WITH
CAUTION!
