Scouting

Scouting is extremely important especially in the early game. The sooner you know what your enemy is doing, the better you can build to counter what the will do.

Things to look for in such games are:
Early gas
Cybernetics core, factory, and lair
Early gas means they will be teching up. If you rush, you may very well win. The other 3 buildings mean your opponent is going for advanced units early. Now for what to do with each race:

Terran - Scout with your 9th scv. Place vulture mines in expansion slots to monitor for expansions. Wraiths will server as early scouts for cliffs. An engineering bay can do so too. Never use your scanner to look for your opponent. It is a big waste. Use it to see what they are doing and for detection. Scanners should be hotkeyed.

Protoss - Scout right after you build your first pylon. Most expert players build a pylon with their 8th probe and this is the probe you should use to scout. Because of a probe's ability to recharge shields, you can annoy your enemy quite a bit. Use it to attack their mining. When its shields are almost gone, run away and let it recharge. Then come back to annoy again but also check what they have. If you think your opponent will tech fast, you can build an assimilator on their gas. This is most effective against terran since most terran players tech up against toss. It's really not worth doing against another toss or zerg. Upgrade your observer speed and sight range for best results. Place them at expansion slots, or patrol if you don't want to build too many.

Zerg - Scout the closest slot with your overlord and scout with a drone later when it is appropriate. Don't let your overlord scout all the bases. It takes a long time and you don't want that. Use a drone. If there is no one at the first slot you scout. Place overlords near enemy entrances and naturals so you can see what they are doing. Use burrowed lings at expansion slots later. Burrow is a useful upgrade that is under used. Against protoss, you should upgrade overlord sight and speed. Zerg has the worst detection of all races and this is the least you can do.

Counter Scouting - To counter early scouters you can put a peon on your ramp. Other peons will not get through. This is not advised if you aren't doing something secretive that you can't let anyone see. It is a waste of a peon's mining ability. Normally you do this until you get another unit to stand on the ramp. Terran of all races should do this because scvs building something are often harassed. One of the advanced strategies you don't see very often is done with protoss. Toss can build things like archives and such outside their bases and an opponent only scouting inside that base will not find it. If I ever decide to DT rush a terran player who scouts a lot, my citadel and archives are not inside my base. It is in some corner in the map where they will not look if they send a unit straight to my base.
