Expansions

Expanding is very important. Some of you may not like this because you forget. When you get used to it, you will like it because it introduces more strategy and skill into the game.

As a basic rule, everyone starts out with the same amount of resources. If you run out of resources, your enemy probably did too. If you have forgotten to scout, now is a reminder. Scout for their expansions when you run out of minerals in your base.

To win, you will probably need to expand. Expanding is in general very dangerous. You spend a lot of money on the new mining area which is very vulnerable. The best time to expand is after a good attack. The second best time is while they expand. Either way, you have to do it sooner or later. If you just have too many minerals because you forgot to keep building, just expand and build more unit pumping buildings.

Preventing your opponent from expanding will put the odds in your favor. If you contain them, you can out produce them by expanding. You can scout all the expasion places and attack when he tries to expand. This is often done with burrowed lings, vulture mines, and observers. It is best to let them put up their building and then kill it so they lose more time and money.

You might want to expand while you attack. They will be distracted. Take your natural (the expansion that is usually placed right outside your base) when you expand. It is easier to defend. You should have your troops move from the inside your base to where your expansion is so you can protect both if necessary.

So now you have your expansion... Take a good number of peons from your main mining area (no more than half your total workers) and bring them to your expansion. This increases the mining efficiency. Pump peons from both mining zones. You will get money a lot faster this way. The fewer the resources in your base, the more peons your bring.

If you took another player's slot as an expansion (whether it started out empty or not) build unit producing buildings in there also. You may have run out of space in your own base but that doesn't mean you don't need anymore unit buildings. The more you have, the faster you can rebuild your lost army.
