ACTION ALERTS

We believe that accurate and unbiased reporting, and fair and even-minded editorial policies will support the Palestinian cause which will inevitably lead to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East because such reporting will inherantly lead to better understanding and therefore better decision-making by a better informed public, about the conflict which will inevitably lead to the fulfillment of justice and respect for human rights, as per international law, which supports the Palestinian cause.

Toward this end we distribute weekly Media Action Alerts to encourage the US Media to report more accurately and unbiased about the conflict between the Israeli government and the Palestinian people.

Below please find summaries and links to copies of past Media Action Alerts.

Here is a link to GUIDELINES for writing responses to our Media Action Alerts, which is also sent to new participants in the Action Alert system in their Welcome Letter.

PAST ACTION ALERTS

AUGUST 2008

  • Action Alert: 3 August 2008 - focuses on bias in reporting on the bulldozer attacks in Jerusalem - all articles except one do not give background information what E.Jerusalem Palestinians are going through that might motivate such attacks.
  • Action Alert: 10 August 2008 - covers an array of articles ranging over a 3 week period reporting on a range of crimes committed by Israel.
  • Action Alert: 24 August 2008 - major Washington Post reporter refers to supporting Palestine as a flaw. Simple education about Israeli multiple violations of international law might help him understand the Palestinian point-of-view.

SEPTEMBER 2008

  • Action Alert: 6 September 2008 - this alert focuses on sending support to the media for overall accurate reporting concerning Israel's surge in settlement expansion in violation of international law and agreements, with three important exceptions.

JUNE 2008

  • Action Alert: 1 June 2008 - focuses on two examples of Israeli collective punishment in Gaza - refusing exit visas to scholarship students, and refusing supplies to the Gaza sewage system which has led to pollution of the Mediterranean Sea, which hurts everyone.
  • Action Alert: 7 June 2008 - discusses the growing attention to the one-state solution, especially in light of Israel refusing to halt settlement expansion in the West Bank.
  • Action Alert: 16 June 2008 - covers numbers of reviews of Adam Sandler's latest film, "You Don't Mess With the Zohan", about an Israeli commando who becomes a NYC hairdresser, and how it and the reviews help perpetuate US public misunderstanding about the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian people.
  • Action Alert: 22 June 2008 - describes the many articles that describe US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice protesting Israel's refusal to halt settlement expansion.
  • Action Alert: 30 June 2008 - this Alert covers the bias in US reporting about the Israeli truce violations to the truce between Hamas and Israel.

JULY 2008

  • Action Alert: 8 July 2008 - this Alert discusses the principle of proportionality and the law covering the legality of collective punishment, and how they apply to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian people.
  • Action Alert: 18 July 2008 - lists legal statutes and principles that support many of the positions of the Palestinian point-of-view.
  • Action Alert: 30 July 2008 - critiques reporting on Israel's latest announcement of new settlement plans, and provides resources for writing about illegality and international protest against them.

APRIL 2008

  • Action Alert: 4 April 2008 - honors the Atlanta Journal-Constitution which publishes two articles within 4 days of each other describing home demolitions in the Negev and in E. Jerusalem.
  • Action Alert: 6 April 2008 - describes an Associated Press article that fails to fully describe how Israel refusing to halt settlement expansion jeopardizes the peace talks begun in Annapolis.
  • Action Alert: 9 April 2008 - heralds an NPR piece broadcast at rush hour that criticized Israeli settlements.
  • Action Alert: 18 April 2008 - focusing on the case of Professor Nadia Abu El-Haj of Barnard College, this alert describes an example of how pro-Israel groups seek to censor with nefarious means academics who's work might make Israel look bad.
  • Action Alert: 22 April 2008 - honors an op-ed by Ziad Asali which describes how settlement expansion and other practices of the Israeli government and military negatively impact the Annapolis peace negotiations.
  • Action Alert: 30 April 2008 - contains non-American resources describing Israeli settlement expansion that US media needs to cover and tell the American public about.

MAY 2008

  • Action Alert: 6 May 2008 - describes a range of wire service articles that accurately describe Israeli settlement expansion and how it is interfering with the Annapolis peace process.
  • Action Alert: 13 May 2008 - describes the legal arguments that refutes Israeli legal reasoning that they are no longer responsible for the well-being of the residents of Gaza since the pull-out in 2005.
  • Action Alert: 25 May 2008 - suggests feedback to the author about the principle of proportionality - that his efforts at fairness are commendable but inaccurate because they do not take into consideration the disproportionate intensity of Israeli abuses of Palestinian rights in the occupied territories.
  • Action Alert: 31 May 2008 - encourages feedback to the Atlantic Monthly, which publishes a lengthy article about the conflict with very little real understanding of what is going on.
