- Amanda McKerrow
won the scholarship donor award from the Washington Chapter in 1980
and won the second place $3500 in the National Society of Arts and Letters,
National competition that year. She is now a principal dancer with ABT.
- Jessye Norman
, winner in voice, has become an International singing star since her

- Awadagin Pratt
winner of the 1989 $3000 Constance Caraway Erskine Award, renewed $500

- Christopher Fletcher
, winner of the National Society of Arts and Letters Career Award in
Printmaking 1997.
- Jeremiah Johnson
, promising artist winner Printmaking competition 1997.
- Jennifer Ann Schmidt
is a promising artist winner in Printmaking competition 1997.
- Anna Sofia Jalickee
studied with Kevin Hluck at Montgomery College before going on for her
MFA.
- Martha Tuzson Stockton, won the architecture award. The challenge
was in relation to historic preservation and restoration. She is
now licensed in Virginia and works for Stoneking von Storch Architects in
Charlottesville, VA. She is a member of AIA, the historic preservation
representative on the Charlottesville Urban Design Committee and editor

- Aaron Wuerker
, winner 1993 NSAL Promising Artist Award, exhibits nationwide, teaches
in Connecticut.
- Enid Adams
, winner of 1980 Cleome Wadsworth Donor Award in Textile Design, with
renewals in 1981 and 1982. Now at Enid Adams Surface Design Studio in The
Plains, VA.
- Alice M. Plaste
r, winner 1973 of NSAL drawing scholarship award is still exhibiting and
winning awards in painting. She recently specialized in painting antique
cars.
- Thomas Locker
, winner of the Scholarship NSAL Washington Chapter in 1956. His paintings
are exhibited and sold across the United States and he has begun to write
books for children and illustrate his own as well as books by others. His
books have won many honors and high acclaim.
- Washington Artist, Frank Wright
, is mentioned on the first page of the NSAL pages. See his exhibit
this summer at the Cosmos Club in Washington, DC. Frank won the Gertrude
Vanderbilt Whitney Trust scholarship in painting in 1950 with renewals
in 1952 and 1953.
- Richard Miller
continues to exhibit his art in New York City galleries regularly.
He won the Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney Trust scholarship in 1948 with renewal
awards from 1949 to 1952 and another in 1955. He can be reached through

DANCE
- Joie Jennings Meffert won the $4000 Mary Rich Peery Fife Memorial
Award in Ballet May 2000. She took seventh place in the National competition
winning $1000.
- Elizabeth Anne Terschuur won the $1,500 promising artist Mary Rich
Peery Fife Memorial Award in Ballet, May 2000.
- Jennifer Scully
won the NSAL Washington Chapter competition in Modern Dance in 1995.
She perfromed with dance companies in New York City until the Autumn of
1991. She received rave reviews for her performance of "Sarajevo" with
her partner in the Gamble/Van Dyke Dance Company. Jennifer Scully taught
dance at the Ballet Academy East in NYC. 2002 Jennifer begins teaching
a Master Class at the University of Western Kentucky.
- Stephanie Anne Walz
won the Constance Caraway Erskine Donor Award in Ballet in 1990. She
is now in the corps de ballet at American Ballet Theatre.
- Carmen O. Rosario won the Charlotte H. Ferris Donor Award in 1990
in Ballet.
- Mark Dendy took the $2000 scholarship award in choreograhpy in 1982
with a renewal in 1988. Mark continues to perform his own works around the
country. His home is now New York city. In 1988 Mark performed at the Kennedy
Center, running a workshop in modern dance for a month followed by a performance
by the students. He received rave reviews in the Washington Post. Use search
engines on his name to see where he is performing next. There is a site
in North Carolina that keeps the most recent records of his performance schedule.
- Amanda McKerrow won the 1980 Ballet scholarship in the Washington
Chapter and the NSAL National Career Award the same year. She was on loan
from American Ballet Theatre to Washington Ballet for the 1999-2000 season
receiving rave reviews in the Washington Post.
- Lynn Cote is now choreographer in residence at the Washington Ballet
(same site as Carmen Rosario but on the home page and look on Staff pages).
Lynn won first place in NSAL Washington Chapter National Career Award in
Ballet in May 1975.
- Marianna Tcherkassky winner Scholarship Donor Award in Dance, NSAL,
Washington Chapter, May 1967. Marianna Tcherkassky is now a member of the
Advisory Council of the Washington Chapter. Marianna recently retired from
her tenure as Primier Dancer with American Ballet Theater.
- Suzanne Longley
won the 1970 Washington Chapter competition in Ballet and represented
our chapter in the National Career Awards competition taking the Second
Award. She is now a Landscape installer and designer in Houston, TX after
15 years of successful performances in various Ballet companies, finishing
the last 9 years with the Houston ballet as Principal Ballerina.
DRAMA
- Jerry Richardson winner of $4000 Award in Acting 1999.
- Jennifer Book winner of $2000 Promising Artist Award 1999. Presently
attends American University.
- Noel True
, winner of 1994 Mollie Davis Nicholson Memorial Fund, Washington
Chapter Award in Acting.
- Arthur Hanket
winner of $1500 Scholarship Award in Acting 1976 will be performing
in The Merry Wives of Windsor in San Diego's Old Globe Theater in September
and October 1999.
LITERATURE
- Joshua Kimerling
won the 2000 Non-Fiction: Feature Article The Frank and Hilda W. Reinhart
Memorial Award for $3000 for his work "Night Writers." Joshua is now
working for Stein Rogan and Partners Ad Agency as creative coordinator.

- Jennifer Smith won The Frank and Hilda W. Reinhard Memorial Award
in 2000 for Non-Fiction: Feature Article, promising artist $1000.
- Andrea Jeyaveeran
from Washington, DC winner of the 1998 creative writing award. Now
works in communications at Bread for the World. Her parents are from India.
She was born in Zambia, but has lived in the USA since she was two years
old.
- Stephen Battista
is from Columbia, MD 1998 promising artist winner in creative writing
accepted into John's Hopkins University Writing Seminars Masters Program.
- Donna C. Lettow
won the Frank W. Reinhart Memorial Award for Television Script-writing
in 1993. Was Associate Creative Consultant on the "Highlander" tv series
until 1998. Worked on "Promised Land." and more...
- Elizabeth Ayres
, winner in 1973 Poetry Award. Now runs her own creative writing center

MUSIC
- Christopher Atzinger
won $4000 Mildred B. Frame Memorial Award in piano in May 2002.
- Joseph Satava
won $2000 Promising Young Artist Award in piano in May 2002
- Jennifer I Yeo won the Marceil Greenhalgh Bishop Music Award in piano
of $4000 in May 2000.
- Kuei-I Wu won the $2000 promising artist award in piano in May 2000
from the Marceil Greenhalgh Bishop Music Award Fund.
- Ty Alan Emerson
won the Eleanor Searle McCollum Donor Award Competition in Composition
for his work, "Bridal Ballad." He continues to compose new works. His music
is to be performed in Massachusetts 2001.
- Paul Jacobs
comes from Washington, PA. He is a student at Curtis Institute of Music
in Philadelphia. At age 15 he was appointed head organist to the Immaculate
Conception Catholic church in Washington, PA. This is a large church of
3,000 families. Currently he is assistant organist of Washington Memorial
Chapel in Valley Forge, PA.
- Clancy Newman
won the Bonita Crowe Wagner Music Legacy Award after competition in
cello in 1992 and a renewal in 1998.
- Awadagin Pratt won the Constance Caraway Erskine Donor Award in
piano 1989.
- Christopher Harding
won the Marceil Greehalgh Bishop award in piano in 1989.
- Richard Andrew Ullman, won the 1975 classical guitar Scholarship
Donor Award, Carl Andrew Spaatz. Richard now lives in Vermont.
He is a teacher and performer of the classical guitar, teaching at Castleton
State College and Green Mountain College as well as the Brattleboro Music
Center. He often performs with singer Elaine Russell. He hopes
to publish some of his many guitar and voice transcriptions.
- Robert Portney, MD
, won the violin competition in 1973. He divides his time between
his medical career and his concertizing. He may be reached at the
Massachusetts General Hospital, Neurology Clinic in Boston, MA or through

- John S. Aler, III
, won the 1972 Award in Voice and renewal in 1973. Performs Internationally
receiving rave reviews.
- Edward Newman won in piano in 1970 with renewals in 1972 and 1979
and now teaches at George Mason University in Virginia when not on tour.
- Francis Conlon
is a pianist who won our competition in 1967 and received extra funding
to compete in International competitions, placing in those. He remains active
in Washington, DC area performing, teaching, and arranging free concerts
every month at The Church of the Annunciation in Washington, DC.

Carl Banner
won the 1964 Scholarship Mrs. Charles K. Holmes Donor Award. He is
a pianist, active in chamber music ensembles in the Washington DC area.
The Washington Post reviews his concerts very favorably. Look for
him at Washington Musica Viva, Inc and Cezanne Trio at the Embassy of
the Czech Republic in the coming months in Washington, D C.
- Olga Sturtevant Toulmin (Sunny Toulmin) won a piano competition
1945 to 1950 in the early years of NSAL. She still plays piano and loves
accompanying singers but now, mostly in retirement communities in Providence,
RI. She plays by ear and transposes easily so is quite popular at
nursing homes and retirement homes where she plays old favorites.

35 years of The National Society of Arts and Letters Scholarships and
Awards were given. She prepared a history of former winners and amounts
each won and then tracked down most of them to learn what had become of
them. Most went on to become successful in their field of art or drama
or literature or dance or music. We will be adding to these pages as we
