Northampton has a population of over 200,000 in 2006, and although still a market town, northampton is the largest town without city status in europe. northampton is famous for its shoe making history with numerous factories throughout the 19th and 20th centuries becoming famous for their footware. dr martens were created in northampton. northampton is earmarked in a south midlands housing development programme which will see over 42,000 new homes built in northampton before 2031, this making northampton one of the highest expanding boroughs in england.
location
northampton is in the east midlands of england and is the admin capital of northamptonshire which as a county has a population of nearly 600,000, northampton is surronded by northamptonshire towns; daventry, wellingborough, kettering, corby and towcester. 15 miles down the m1 motorway is milton keynes; a fierce rival in commerce and bragging rights. the nearest town and cities to northampton outside northamptonshire are coventry, leicester, bedford, peterborough, milton keynes and rugby. northampton is also in excellent central location of being between birmingham and london, both only taking just under an hour on train to get to.
transport
the most famous motorway the m1 runs past northampton which is accessable from junctions 15 [kislingbury], junction 15a [rothersthorpe] and junction 16 [grange park] - the m1 runs from leeds to london and is the main spine in england's road system.
rail links in northampton are also just as good, northampton runs on the west coast main line which runs from birmingham new street to london euston. running through coventry, rugby, milton keynes, bletchley, leight buzzard and watford. 3 train operators use northampton castle station [the main station] - that being silverlink, central and virgin.
famous
northampton is home to the headquarters of carlsberg, avon, tesco, travis perkins, levis, morrisons, barclays, nationwide and many other companies. also, northamptonshire is home to the british grand prix in formula 1, around 15 miles south of northampton the racetrack silverstone becomes a massive venue for motor racing. northampton also holds an annual event at the racecourse, the northampton balloon festival is usually visited by over 200,000 each year and has been running for over a decade.
culture
according to the 2001 census [a now study which is over 5 years old] northampton's black/ethnic population was around 8%, due to predictions, northampton's new black/ethnic population in 2006 could be around just over 10%. to break down, that's 89.7% white [just over average with england] 2% mixed [just over average with england] 3.7% asian [average with england] 3.1% black [over average with england] 1.4% chinese/other [just over average with england].
northampton has had a strong bangladeshi and caribeean population for over 20 years. the most ethnic diverse wards in northampton are 20% st crispin, 19% castle and 19% lumbertubs.

northampton has a host of landmarks, historic ones including queen eleanor's cross on london road in far cotton. northampton has also be known for its wealth of parks in and around the borough, these include abington park, racecourse, delapre park, midsummer meadow, lings wood, dallington park, berrywood park and bradlaugh fields.
