MADE IN THE U.S.A.
Binibining Pilipinas of the World 1999 Christina Legaspi Fandino is the latest beauty  being eyed by  the public as the next  potential Miss Philippines for 2001. Does she have what it takes? Critics are quick to point out that she is too  short at 5 feet and 6 inches and failed to make waves in this year's Miss Millenium Pageant in Helsinki, Finland! On the other hand, admirers say she
is the perfect package with the beauty of a Margie Moran combined with the elegance of  Miriam, the appeal of Ruffa Gutierrez and the mestiza profile of Charlene  Gonzales. Pageant  fans who have  seen her compete say: " Tina  moves like a Venezuelan and talks like an American with the eloquence of an Indian." Is this enough?

Christina is also a Broadcast Journalism major at the San Diego State Univer- sity and a pageant veteran who has competed in both local & international ti- tles. Add  to that, sheer  determination to  win and the  competitive  spirit that transforms ordinary  people from whiners to winners! To top it all, our gal has already submitted her credentials to the Binibining Pilipinas and quietly assures everyone that she is indeed a Filipino citizen. What awaits Christina? Who knows? She just might be IT !

MISS
PHILIPPINES?
IS SHE THE ONE TO BEAT?
MADE IN THE PHILIPPINES
Nineteen year old model Margie Licandro is fast becoming one of Manila's most  recognized faces. Having  appeared in ads for  Rustan's and Krunch Chips, the 5 feet and 7 1/2 inch stunner who bears an undeniable resemblance to 1993 Miss Universe Dayanara Torres of Puerto Rico, also dreams of some
day  owning her own fashion  magazine. Fashion has always been one of her passions and she is striving very hard to prove that modelling is not all about glamour alone, but also about giving people a vision and presenting an image that affects everyone in a positive way. Beauty queen material? Judge for yourselves!

KATHY IN HALSTON : A MILESTONE
Miriam's gown in Miss U
1999 was a Halston, and it worked  for her! Why not for  Kathy? After the Hal- ston  gowns  appeared in the 'Send in the Evening
Gowns' Section of 'Miss
Philippines Beyond 2000,'
what  better way to bring reality  to the  big screen than with a few tricks of the  trade? Both of these gowns  are exquisite and expensive. Not surprising, quality  does not come cheap!  Honestly, with Kathy's good looks, the gown is secondary, but worth spending for. Give her the best & she'll do
the rest!

HOMEGROWN BEAUTIES ARE BETTER, PRETTIER, AND SMARTER
Who says  Filipina beauties have to be reared  abroad just to excel in  the international stage  of the Miss Universe and Miss World? Who among the previous candidates with foreign sounding names even  man-
aged to  land in the  semi-finals? Gloria, Margie,  Gemma, Aurora,  Melanie, Chat, Desiree, Miriam, and Evangeline are all Filipinas by birth with no american upbringing whatsoever and yet they were winners in their own right! Nothing against Filipinas  born and raised abroad, but it's disheartening to know that those that  were brought nothing  but shame and  embarassment to the  name of Miss  Philippines. Homegrown beauties make more sense to be the true representatives of Philippine culture! Preview magazine's recent cover  of some of the  country's most  beautiful native women attest to the fact that these ladies exist and they are right in our own backyard! Binibining Pilipinas should go back to their roots!

BINIBINING PILIPINAS OF THE WORLD 2000
The new Binibining Pilipinas of the World 2000 was crowned last August. The winner (left) is Tammy Barcenilla, a
19 year old student at the University of  California  majoring  in Social Ecology. From  below left, 1st Run-
ner-Up, Rachel Solidarios; 2nd Run-
ner-Up, Christina Jesena; and 3rd Runner-Up, Kimberly de Lucas. The Binibining Pilipinas of the World
Pageant is  held annually to  select the delegate  who will best represent  the Filipino community in North America at the Binibining Pilipinas Pageant in Manila.

Tetchie Agbayani  was a runner-up in  the 1979  Mutya of the Philippines Pageant. Though she never gave it another try, she went  on to become  a successful  actress and  broke into the international  scene after her stint as a covergirl/playmate in the German edition of Playboy. She has since starred in Hollywood films like 'The Emerald Forest' and 'The Money Pit.' If Tetchie
were to compete today in the Binibining Pilipinas, she could easily win the Miss Philippines Universe title with her exotic looks  and give  even Miss Venezuela  a run for  her money.
Too bad the pageant world just ignored her!

PAGEANT'S LOSS, MODELLING'S GAIN
Anna Bayle  was just  another contestant in the Miss Republic of the Philippines contest in the 70's when designer Auggie Cordero introduced her to the glamorous world of modelling. First it was Manila & Hongkong, then  New York, and  eventually, Paris and Milan. The  first Asian  supermodel  to ever break into a world dominated by fairskin-ned  Americans and  Europeans!  Anna is a classic and a league of her own. Her catwalk has  been described  now as  legendary and copied so  many times. Now  retired, Anna has recently  launched  her own cosmetic line. If she were to compete today, the 5'9" stunner  with olive skin and long limbs can surely make any serious competitor think twice. What  a loss to  the world  of Miss Philippines!

Valerie Celis has slowly risen from unknown girl next door in the Philippines to Asian su- permodel status in just a few years. The cur-
rent face of Calvin Kelin's CK One perfume, Valerie,  like Anna  Bayle, has  appeared in countless covers and shows in both sides of the  Atlantic. Very Filipina in looks, the 5'8" model  has the ethnic 'flavor' that makes her stand out from an industry partial to fair skin, blonde hair, and blue eyes! If she were to be-
come  Miss Philippines, just  think of where she might eventually end up.

FACE TO FACE
Miss Universe of 1974, Spain's Amparo Munoz pays a cour-
tesy  call to  First Lady Imelda  Marcos at  the Malacanang Palace. With  her are from  left, Miss Colombia, Cecilia Escandon, 3rd Runner-Up; Miss Wales, Helen Morgan, 1st Runner-Up,  Miss Aruba, Maureen Ava Viera, 4th Runner-Up, and  Miss Finland, Johanna  Raunio, 2nd  Runner-Up. What makes this interesting is that Imelda herself was a for-
mer beauty queen. Before her whirlwind romance with Mr. Ferdinand Marcos, 'Meldy' was chosen Miss Manila.

Politics  aside, Imelda  Marcos is one of  the true  icons of Philippine beauty and fashion. Always elegant in the Terno and anything  Philippine  made, Imelda  knew exactly what worked and what did not. LIFE magazine in the late 1960's once featured Imelda on it's cover with the description :
'The Philippines Fabulous First Lady.' What an appropriate way to summarize the beauty of Asia's 'Iron Butterfly.'

KATHY & MELDY
Imelda's  hairstyle has literally changed little over the years. From her time at the Malaca-
nang Palace to the present, it's still the same bouffant, well coiffed hairstyle that miracu-
lously  remains in  place no matter what. . . come hell, high water, revolution, election or what  have! Let's  face it, the  hairstyle is u- nique  and elegant at the same time, and pa-
geant  fans are  wondering  whether Miss
World Philippines Kathy De Guzman should opt for the same packaging. Judge for your- selves. I think it just might work!
Right after 'Miss Philippines Beyond 2000' was launched September 1 with a feature on Desiree's stint at Miss Universe 1984, one talented pageant fan decided to use computer wizardry and see whether the eth-
nic  gown that Desiree  wore would  suit Kathy (above right). Personally, it is  perfect! Imelda's hairstyle, Desiree's ethnic multi-colored evening gown plus Kathy's dark looks is one winning combination.

WHO'S THAT GIRL?
She is  Anna Melissa  Veneracion, 1977 Mutya  of the Philippines  World. This picture was  taken when she was  still  in high school. Anna, a  favorite during the Miss World Finals in London, withdrew from the competition with 5 other contestants in protest to the  apartheid policy in  South Africa. She later  on competed in the  Miss Ambar del Mundo  Pageant where she ended up as Second Runner-Up. Why can't we just keep politics away from beauty pageants? If Anna did not withdrew, she would have had a big  chance of  bagging the crown! Moral  of the story: Let South Africa deal with her own problems!

BEAUTY AND A BAD MOVE
NUMERO UNO
Miss  Universe  Pageant of 1975 in El Salvador. Miss Philippines, Chiqui Brosas, was dubbed by the local press as 'Numero Uno.' The clear favo- rite to win the title. Why not? This was the 70's, the  decade  when the Philippines  was still very much in track in choosing the right girls to repre-
sent the  country. Chiqui  was smart, exotic and very Filipina in her looks!

Come pageant night, she makes it to the semi-final and  final rounds. Causes a stir with her jaw drop-
ping evening gown with a cape that made her look as if  she was flying. Almost wins the crown if not for  her simple answer to the final question: "Who would you  thank tonight if  you win the crown?"
Chiqui's  simple-I-did-not-think-about-it  answer was: "I'll thank the judges." Beautiful Chiqui ends up as 4th Runner-Up to Finland's Anne Pohtamo.
