1993...Sun City, Johannesburg, South Africa, the venue of the . . .
43rd Miss World Beauty Pageant
"Hi! This is Sharmaine Ruffa Gutierrez, 19 years old, and I come from the Philippines !"
Another Filipina is set to make a mark in the international stage! Relive the moments! |

During the parade of nations, Ruffa wears a Muslim national costume ins- pired by the legendary 'Sarimanok' of the Southern Philippines. A floor length dress topped by a feathered cape with a matching 'avian' head- dress and matching Maranao beaded umbrella complete the look. Ruffa introduces herself in her signature accent and style and sets the ball rolling for the night! |

The moment has arrived. The an- nouncement of the ten semi-finalists. Surprisingly, the contestants are al- ready wearing their evening gowns! Miss Finland is called first, followed closely by the lovely Ruffa Gutierrez, Miss Philippines! The other semi-finalists in random order are : Korea, Croatia, Sweden, Venezuela, USA, Jamaica, France and of course, the home girl, Miss South Africa. On with the swimsuit competition! |

Ruffa is all glamor and poise as the swimsuit competition unfolds. Hair perfectly coiffed, smile as radiant as ever, and a figure though not perfect, looked so good on stage as she paraded across the SuperBowl! This is what beauty queens are all about. Though imper- fections are inevitable, how does she carry herself in front of millions of people? Ruffa certainly stood out with her regal bearing which most of the girls just couldn't match ! |

Although amongst all the ten semi-finalists Sweden obviously had the best bod of the night, no one can contend the obvious fact that Ruffa carried herself very well. Pageant critics say, "Hey, doesn't she have big thighs?" Well, when you look at them, they do look a bit untoned but only because Ruffa is the voluptuous kind of figure in sharp contrast to the 'gamine' or the 'waif' look. Never the less, she delivered as expected and though we may never really know what her score was in the swimsuit competition, this board gives her a 9.45 ! |

For the evening gown parade, Ruffa wears an Orient inspired gown that mimics the style of the oh so fa- miliar Vietnamese national dress. The dark color of the evening gown sets off her smooth, fair skin and Eurasian features. Though the neck area is closed off, the generous high slit of the gown in front more than makes up for what is missing! This board gives Ruffa a 9.80 for her evening gown parade. |

"If I become Miss World, I'd surely be the hap- piest person on earth. Surely, it will change me in many ways, but definitely my sentiments for my family, parents, friends, loved ones and all my fans in the Philippines will remain the same, thank you." -Ruffa Gutierrez |

The time to choose the final five has ar- rived and Pierce Brosnan calls the name of the first finalist, Miss Philippines! The other finalists were Croatia, South Africa, Venezuela, and Jamaica. During the final five interview, each girl was asked to pick the name of a judge from a bowl. Ruffa picked by chance, the first black Miss America and famous moviestar/singer, Vanessa Williams! |

"What would you tell a girl suffering from low self- esteem to feel good about herself?" -Vanessa Williams |
|

|

|
"I would tell her to believe in herself because it's not only physical beauty that is important but also inner beauty. Just like what the little prince said, 'The essential things are invisible to the naked eye.' Definitely, character and personality are more important than physical beauty." -Ruffa Gutierrez |
