The Era of the Eightys : The decade of . . .

...............ETHNIC DIVERSITY

Gone are the days when the mestiza had an edge  over the  morena. At a time of chan- ging concepts and opinions on beauty, new and unconventional looks have surfaced to fill the title of . . .

..........MISS PHILIPPINES

For so long a time, pageant loving Filipinos have  always  favored  the  light skinned, mixed  heritage mestizas  over the  more exotic dark skinned morenas. Whenever a morena  would  win over a  mestiza, she   would always be big news, attracting  both  acclaim and criticism. How  many of these  dark skinned  enchantresses  have proven their critics wrong?

Time  and  time again, as  the most hyped candidates failed to deliver, the ignored but equally  lovely, captivating  and beautiful ethnic queens continue to bring home the bacon much to everyone's surprise.

Proves one  thing though, beauty is not partial to skin color. Beauty is universal. Beauty is not biased. Yes . . .

1980 The beautiful Chat Silayan competes in the
Miss Universe Pageant in Seoul, Korea. Prior to pageant night, she was  numbered as one of the ear- ly favorites. Come pageant finals, Bob Barker called her name as one of the ten semi-finalists. During  the interview portion, Bob asked her whether she wanted to become an actress like her famous father. Her reply was an unconvincing, "No! because the movies are not good  for  women." She  managed to ease into the five finalists together with the USA, Scotland, New Zealand, and  Sweden. Her wits and  presence on stage was enough to land her as 3rd Runner-up to Shawn Weatherly of the USA, the new queen.
Bob Barker : "If given the chance to meet anyone in the world today, who would it be and why?"

Chat :" I really have no one in mind in par- ticular. I'd  like to  meet anyone  who is in charge of running or ruling a government."
1984 Saw Maria Desireee Verdadero competing in the Miss Universe Pageant in Miami, Florida. Though so close to almost winning the crown, she ended up as 3rd Runner-up to Sweden's Yvonne Ryding.
1987 Was Pebbles Asis' turn for the Miss Universe Pageant in Singapore. She was one of the 10 semi-finalists that year.

When Maria Desiree Verdadero won the Miss Philippines Universe title in '84, a lot of the viewing public was high-
ly skeptical of her chances in the international arena of the
Miss Universe Pageant.
"Here is another dark skinned mo- rena, the public grumbled,  "who might not even make it
to top ten."
Others said she didn't even look like a beau-
ty queen! Never the less, as unforgiving as the public was, her mentor and discoverer, designer Renee Salud, was ful-
ly aware of her potentials and backed her up all the way.
So amidst all the nagging and complaining tongues of the bored public, Desiree was on her way to the . . .

While singing to the tune of "All Night Long", the camera focuses on the lovely Miss Philippines, Desiree Verdadero, wear-
ing a Muslim inspired national costume de-
signed and created by her discoverer, Re-
nee Salud. Inspiration for the ensemble is drawn from the wedding dress of the Yakan women of Mindanao who are fa-
mous for their flamboyant use of elaborate
headdresses specially during their wedding
day. Desiree's national costume is perhaps
one of the most exotic dresses ever worn by a Miss Philippines in the Miss Universe
Pageant!

Hey, this was the 80's and the video of the
preliminary swimsuit competition was still a part of the final telecast! Desiree is shown  here getting ready to get a tan wearing a white one piece bathing suit that shows off her stunning hourglass figure. The swimsuit is in direct contrast to her dark morena fea-
tures, making her a real stand-out from the other candidates. The judges seem to agree to this for they gave her a score of
8.245! Not too generous in today's standards but certainly was good enough 16 years ago!

The dreaded semi-final interview! Bob Barker gets comfortable with Desiree . . .

Bob : Miss Philippines, Maria Desiree Verdadero is a model from Manila. So, how long have you been a model?

Desiree : I've been a model for two years.

Bob : What type of modelling assignments have you done so far?
Desiree : I've done ramp and commercial modelling.

Bob : There are thousands of girls watching us on television right now who have dreams of becoming a model. What can you tell them about
the job?

Desiree : First of all, modelling is not an easy job and it is also not a stable job!

Bob : Well, you have to be an unstable person to become a model!
So, do you have an agent?
