The evening gown competition. The grand finale of the night. Each  girl wearing a  gown of her own  choice,
whether it be homemade or designer frock.

The  marriage of good taste  and elegance. No matter how beautiful and exquisite an evening  gown may be,
if the delegate does not know how to carry it, all is lost.

At times, the most beautiful pageant favorite loses points  because of a poor choice of evening gown. Outdated style? Wrong color? Too long? Too short?

Miss Philippines has always carried herself well in this competition.  There were  times when the choice worked, and there were also times she made a mistake.

What has Miss Philippines worn in this event through the years? Come on , and . . .

Send in the Evening Gowns!
Margie Moran
Miss Universe 1973
WHAT MAKES A GOWN A SUCCESS?

What makes or breaks an evening gown is determined by the
four C's, namely:

*CUT (design and style)
*CARAT ( classy or cheesy?)
*CRAFTSMANSHIP (quality of construction)
*COUNTENANCE (contestant's poise and bearing)
MARGIE'S ETHNIC GOWN HELPED HER GET THE CROWN!

Margarita's gown was the crowning
glory of the 1973 pageant night. The sleeveless  ensemble was done in simple white with nothing more than ethnic inspired appliques in varying shades  of red, green  and yellow adorning the area just below her
waist. A cabbage rose pinned on her shoulder added the final touch to this feminine creation.

The design plus Margie's regal, queen- nly  presence on stage made this eve-
ning gown a success!

Cut- 9.00           Craftsmanship- 9.00
Carat- 9.00         Countenance- 9.95

Suggestions: This gown was more than good enough for its era 27 years ago. There is nothing to add or take away from it and it's wearer. Margie wore the gown, it didn't 'wear' her!
No wonder she won.
aaaCHARLENE IN         aYELLOW, PERHAPS   aaaTOO MELLOW!

Charlene's yellow number for the 1994 pageant ech- oed the ball gown designs of the  80's. A full tulle skirt  complimented by a strapless top with sequins and  gold lace  appliques gave  this gown quite an enduring, classy appeal.

Add to this Charlene's bubbly personality on stage and the result is a gown that is even more fun to watch.

Cut- 8.70
Carat- 8.80
Craftsmanship- 8.60
Countenance- 9.30

Suggestions: Big hair is passe', should've been
pulled back instead. Ball
gown design made her look a little bit plump. Should've gone for a more
form fitting number. Gold,
though classy, is just not for pageants!

THE 4 C'S
OF HOW TO WEAR AN
EVENING
GOWN
JEWEL'S TOO TIGHT IN THAT CORSET,
       SHOULD HAVE JUST LEFT IT
                  IN THE CLOSET!

The gown Jewel wore is a clear reflection of the 'corset' fad that swept the late 90's. Jewel's
tall, slim  silhoutte is further enhanced by the pale color she chose and the vertical lines on her corset. Her faux diamond choker adds a
bit of class to this shimmering creation.

Cut- 8.80                     Craftsmanship- 8.60
Carat- 8.70                  Countenance- 8.90

Suggestions: Jewel should have pulled her hair
back for a  more 'polished' evening look. The design of the gown  could have  used a little more 'oomph' with a lower neckline or a bit
of beading in selected areas perhaps on the corset itself. The total look of the gown lacks the 'majesty' that gowns of  eventual winners have. The gown doesn't really stand out. A bit ordinary, in fact,  looks  like  something  from
the racks of Nordstrom.

MIRIAM IN HER BEADED HALSTON
POLISHED LIKE A PRECIOUS STONE!

Miriam's couture gown by Halston is the very best ever! Simple and yet cutting edge, the one shouldered gown is a  work of art. The  pale blue shade was just right for Miriam's dusky complexion and  prominent  Asian features.
This is just the kind of gown that one might
see at a Hollywood Premiere or at the Acade-
my Awards. Very glitzy!

I agree, the gown is exquisite, but what even made it more stunning was how Miriam car-
ied it. Even after tripping, Miriam recovered quickly and still  managed to  regain her composure and proceeded as if nothing hap-
pened! A world  class act, if I  must say.

Cut- 9.99                     Craftsmanship- 9.99
Carat- 9.99                   Countenance- 9.99

Suggestions: There are none. Miriam and her
Halston should be a blueprint for all future
Miss Philippines.

aaDOES WEARING COUTURE    aaDETERMINE THE FUTURE?

Couture  gowns  are of the finest quality and the best in style. If you move in it properly, you greatly in-
crease your chances of winning. On
the  other hand, if you are one lousy
dresser, even a  $10,000  gown will not  pull you up from  way down!

Nina Ricci Alagao
Miss Philippines Universe 2000
NINA AND THE GOWN OF PURE GOLD,  nnWON'T TAKE YOU FAR, JUST AS          aaaaaaaHAS BEEN FORETOLD!

Nina's gold plated Colombian number has been described  as her 'second skin.' The fit of the gown  is superb! The style itself is Hollywood glamour, reminiscent of the  couture gowns of the House of Versace and it's weakness for the opulent  and excessive. The low cut neckline and  matching shoulder straps  were enhanced by Swarovski crystals and minor draping under the  bustline further emphasizes  Nina Ricci's incredible figure.

Cut- 8.90                   Craftsmanship-8.40
Carat- 8.80                 Countenance- 9.90

Suggestions: Gown could've been a little bit longer and  gold is just not the color for pa- geants. Hair should have been just a simple, neat chignon. Nina carried the gown very well, the  problem is, the gown  was not as  specta- cular as what it was expected to be. In the
end, all what the judges could see was the
gown and not the girl.
WAS IT REALLY THE GOWN THAT LET NINA DOWN? READ WHAT FANS AND PAGEANT OBSERVERS HAVE TO SAY!
HONESTY  AFTER ALL, IS  STILL THE BEST POLICY! NOTHING PERSONAL!
"The fit of that gown is incredible. We were
not only looking at Nina or the gown, but we were  looking at Nina  through the gown. A great choice!"

"Miss Philippines looks like a Greek goddess in the gown of her choice. Gold is a color you will either love or hate. The only muted gold color used in the competition. It's not at all
distracting. Very complimentary, in fact."

"Personally, I think the color of the gown is pathetic! It wrinkles in all the wrong places, it's a tad too short, and it is not complimentary at all. Her hair is a mess. She looked a lot better in Binibini Finals night."
                                                -Posted in Mabuhay
"Nina herself  was disappointed  with the gown. She called up the organizers and let them know. I think the designer will be in Cyprus on Finals night and  said he will try to fix the problem. I doubt if there is anything he could really do."
                                                       - Anonymous
"I believe Nina was shortchanged by that Colombian
designer. Why should he design something for Nina that might look better than the gown he designed as well for Miss Colombia? Come on guys, their country last won the title something like more than forty years ago."
                                                        -Pageant Fan
Moral of the story : We learn from both success and failure. Any wise sug-
gestions?  The world famous
House of Halston has this to say, "Stick with
the  Miriam Q. formula.  It ain't  broken, so why fix it?"
Do  you agree ?

Both of these evening gowns have Nina's name written all over it. Perfect to show off her sexy bod.
A few  words from The Versace Haute Couture House : "Why not try us?
I know we are more expensive, might be beyond your budget, but hey,
we
are the creme-de-la-creme of fashion houses
and if you want quality, you
gotta spend more.
There is a price to pay if you want a shot at the prize!"

If Nina really wants gold, here is the perfect gold evening gown for her! It's glitzy alright and an attention getter, but the quality and craftsmanship are first class! The pink number on the right would be just right for Joanna at the Miss International Pageant. The audience will go GA-GA over her!

The one on the left is definitely Joanna's gown  and the one on the right is more of a Katherine thing.
