The Timeless Look of An Era Long Gone
The filipina of the fiftys. . . the classic look forever frozen in time. . .

. . .Perfectly chiseled features, well lined lips, luxuriant growth of perfectly groomed jet black hair, alabaster skin, an ethereal glow, and the
gentle look of the eyes that seem to gaze from
here to eternity. . .

The timeless aura of a genteel era long gone. Who could not forget the ageless beauty of years past?

Yes, she is the face behind the frame.

THE FILIPINA IS FOREVER
Unforgettable, that is what you are...
Pura Tanjutco, University of Santo Tomas,
College of Education, Manila, Circa 1951
What made these women look so different?

The perfect combination of good looks, charm and personality combined with the strict disciplinary graces of the period, has given these local beauties an eternal aura that is still very appealing half a century later. None of these women are superstars, the coed above  and the debutante on the right were classmates in college. . . nothing more than that. The women of the fiftys were very conser- vative and conscious of the social graces taught in school. Most of them, before college, grew up burning the candle in Roman Catholic high schools enrolled as
interns. These women are the true legacy of Philippine culture.
Here comes the bride! Wedding in Manila, early 1950's.
Two women, two styles. A Hollywood star look on the debutante on the left & a  traditional  'Filipiniana' look on the pretty bride above. Whatever they do, whatever they wear, they always get it right. From sunrise to sunset, a sure bet!

The Magic of Brown and White

Brown and white photography is long a thing of the past, but it's allure and attraction extends way past it's heydays. What made those pictures of the past so different? So magical? The secret lies in a couple of things. Proper lighting, with an emphasis on subtle shadows plus the right backdrop and of course, not to mention the subjects themselves all contributed to the 'look' of the photograph. Positions and the way the subjects are presented are intentional, stylized and even choreographed. One thing that is consistent though is the impeccable way the subjects are dressed, regardless of their social or economic status! Add to this the personality of the women of that decade, the conservative upbringing they were used to, and the emphasis on social graces, all contributed to the final outcome. As a finale, the color of the photograph itself, brown and white, artificially 'aged' the print, and thus, the classical,  timeless, ageless, look!

**THE EYES THAT SEE THE FUTURE**
Advising the women of the 50's not to look direct-
ly at the camera was the best thing that ever hap-
pened! When the eyes are focused elsewhere, it
makes the viewer wonder what is going on inside the  model's head. The models'  pose gives them
a look of mystical qualities, as if they were trying  to gaze into  the unpredictable future with all its
uncertainties and possibilities.

The young Anita Linda, Manila actress,
circa 1950's.
"Whether  these women are  beauty queens, actresses  or not, the  fact re-
mains that any of them could pass for one. These  ladies are the  grand old beauties of our heritage. A clear de- finition of  who a Filipina  really is."

THE FILIPINA
BEAUTY
IS LIKE
FINE WINE..
GETS BETTER
WITH AGE...
Local beauty, Manila, 1954
Filipinas of the fiftys were very much into the national dress more as compared to today's generation. To them, wearing the country's official clothing was an honor and reserved only for the best occasions. True enough, only the Filipina with her soft shoulders, dainty countenance and reserved mannerisms could do justice to this dress that would otherwise look ridiculous if worn by a foreign- er totally uninformed of the country's heritage.

Oh yes, beauty pageants were already a craze as
early as  back then!  Since this decade is already half a  century ago, finding  pictures of beauty queens from this era are extremely difficult! The women featured  here are all from a private col- lection and were used to give the viewer an idea  of what made the Filipinas of five decades ago so special. Names are  withheld in this section in the interest of privacy. One or two of the women fea- tured here are local beauty queens, enough I guess to satisfy our curiosity!

Mrs. Elvie Tanjutco

Portrait of a 29 Year Old Mother
Josephine Tanjutco
Filipina-American Beauty
United States of America, 1950's
Josephine  Tanjutco  was  a  filipina  american born  to  a  filipino father and a caucasian ame-rican mother. According to family archives, her parents never married; though the biracial beau- ty  still  adapted  her  father's  last  name.  Last known  picture  of  her  was  taken  during  her wedding day (right). Josephine never met any of her  half  brothers or half sisters. Pura Tanjutco,
one  of  her  half sisters (whose picture appears
at  the  beginning of this page), bears an undeni-
able resemblance to our filipina american muse!
