It's the 70'S! The decade still very much in the shadow of the swinging 60's. So what's in style?
Big, indestructible hair, lots of eye make-up, false eyelashes, bell bottoms, mini-skirts, 'flower power,' MOD fever, and of course...
BEAUTY PAGEANTS !
The Philippines had it's taste of victory during the 60's with the winnings of Gemma Cruz and Gloria Diaz. What about the 70's? As it turned out to be, the decade is perhaps the most successful period in the history of the ...

Aurora was a standout from the very beginning. The tall, statuesque mestiza beauty impressed them all with her winning ways. The product of good breeding, high quality education and a sense of personal style can produce nothing but a winner! |

1971 Was again a lucky year for the country. Two Filipinas garnered honors in their respective pageants. During the 1971 Miss Universe Pageant in Miami, Vida Doria (left) was voted by the press as Miss Photogenic. To finish the year, Evelyn Camus (right) landed as 2nd Runner-up at the Miss International Pageant. Had she won, it would have been a back to back victory for the Philippines! |

1972 Saw two more Filipinas making waves in the international arena of beauty and brains. Armi Barbara Crespo (left) made it to the semi-finals round in the Miss Universe Pageant in Puerto Rico and caused such a reaction from the audience during the evening gown competition. Meanwhile, Yolanda Dominguez (right) landed as 2nd Runner-up again at the Miss International Pageant. With all these back to back honors, was all these a preview of even better things to come? |

1973 Was the biggest and best year of them all! Margie Moran was crowned as the country's 2nd Miss Universe at the pageant held in the Mediterranean city of Athens, Greece. Prior to the pageant, she was also voted by members of the press as Miss Photogenic! During the pageant, Bob Barker referred to her as the 'Jackie Onassis' of the Philippines, refering to her 'lovc of counting money' as one of the reasons why she took up Banking & Finance in college. We all know that she also told the audience that she wanted to set up a hotel business someday which, not surprisingly, came true! By the end of the competition, she was neck and neck with Amanda Jones of the U.S.A. The final question: Bob Barker asked her, "What would you do if you had a million dollars today?" Her simple, direct to the point no frills answer: "If I had a million bucks today, I'd buy a house since that's something I can't afford and live by myself of course, together with the people I love." And so it happened as destiny planned it to be: Margie could not but win! |

The new Miss Universe just couldn't believe her ears as her name was announced as the winner. After all, she joined the Miss Philippines pageant without the knowledge and consent of her parents! There she walked down the stage in her ethnic evening gown and bouffant hairdo, proclaiming to the rest ofthe world that the Philippines was fast becoming a pageant powerhouse in Asia. The next day, her victory was headlines all over the country and for some weeks after that, the pageant was replayed day in and day out and people didn't really mind! |

1973 WAS A YEAR TO REMEMBER ! THE CLIMAX OF PAGEANT HISTORY IN THE PHILIPPINES ! |
1973 Was far form over! Marilen Ojeda, Miss Philippines International, went on to win the 4th Runner-up position in the Miss International Pageant in Tokyo. Golly! Was this the Philippines' lucky decade or what? Seems like Margie's & Marilen's stars were out that year! |

EVANGELINE PASCUAL COULD HAVE BEEN THE FIRST FILIPINA MISS WORLD! |
1973 Definitely was one hell of a year! As if Margie's and Marilen's victories were not enough, another Filipina was in the news! Evangeline Pascual, Miss Republic of the Philippines (then a separate pageant), almost won the first Miss World crown for the Philippines. She landed as First Runner-up to the U.S.A.'s Marjorie Wallace.
As history will tell it, she tied with Marjorie near the end of the competition and how that tie was broken is something we might really never find out. Never the less, she was a top favorite then with her dizzying height, alabaster like features and perfectly coiffed hair. Her swimsuit was amazing! Designed to reflect the colors of the national flag, it was a runaway hit with the British press.
Never the less, a few months later, crisis hits the Miss World Organization with the dethronement of Marjorie Wallace over some moral issues. Although the title was offered to Evangeline, she was rumored to have politely declined the crown for reasons undisclosed.
If Evangeline accepted the title, 1973 would have been the only year in the history of the Philippine Pageant scene that the 2 major world titles are in local shores. Sad to say, it never happened. Not meant to be, I guess. |
WHY DID EVANGELINE REFUSE THE CROWN?
Although the title was offered to her, she reportedly declined. The reason? One rumor has it that she 'demanded' a public, worldwide coronation which Eric Morley didn't buy, saying it was a request too expensive! Another rumor has it that Eric only offered her the job but not the title, meaning while she performed the duties, Marjorie would still be the official Miss World. Now, isn't that a bit on the eccentric? It's like asking a doctor to operate on a patient but not to address him as a doctor! Oh well, whatever the real reason is, it's already water under the bridge. Too bad, just simply too bad! Evangeline could have been an excellent Miss World. |

1974 The Miss Universe Pageant comes to Manila! Spain's Amparo Munoz wins the title that year and our very own Guadalupe Sanchez was a semi-finalist! Good enough though, considering she was competing on home grounds and to make it even more difficult, the outgoing Miss Universe is a fellow Filipina! |

Jaye Murphy, reigning Miss Philippines International, not to be outdone, landed as a semi-finalist in the Miss International Pageant. |

MELANIE WINS 3RD MISS INTER NATIONAL CROWN FOR THE PHILIPPINES |

1979 The last year of the decade ended again in another victory for the Philippines as Melanie Marquez won the third Miss International crown for the country! Prior to that, she was also named Best in National Costume by the Japanese judges. Way to go! The decade began with a winner and closes yet with another winner from the same beauty pageant! Coincidence or fate? Congratulations, girls of the 70's !!! |

MELANIE CALLS UP DESIGNER FRIEND RIGHT AFTER THE PAGEANT NIGHT IN TOKYO, JAPAN |

Melanie Marquez swept Tokyo like a storm! Right after the contest, she called up her designer and discoverer, Renee Salud. The first news she broke to Renee was her winning of the Best in National Costume Award, pertaining to the extravagant five thousand peso terno she wore for the opening number. This was good news to Renee's ears though, since he both designed and made the costume! Renee without hesitation, replied: "Wow, they really liked the national costume, huh? What about the crown itself? Who won the crown?" Melanie's now for the history books reply was : "I ALSO WON IT!" Renee almost fainted!

Melanie's success in the beauty arena does not end after her reign as Miss International. Early in the 80's she would become an overnight sensation in New York and Europe right after Ford Models signed her up. She went on to become "Most Beautiful Woman in Italy," and of course, almost winning the Supermodel of the World Competition in the USA, where she emerged as a finalist. |
