What looks best on Miss Philippines? The 'safe & conservative' one piece bathing suit? or The risky 'show-me-what-you've-got' two piece revealer? |

Miss Philippines in swimsuit! Over the years, Filipinas have always opted for the one piece. No choice though during the early years, since one piece was all what they were permitted to wear. With the onset of the 90's, beauty pageants began to relax their hold and slowly allowed contestants to wear the all revealing two piece.
Miss Philippines stood her ground and continued with the one piece with the excuse that 'Asians don't look good wearing a bikini!' Miriam stayed with the one piece and came out second in the bathing suit competition. Nina broke the habit and strutted her stuff in a two piece, showing off her fabulous figure and though she never made the cut, she got rave reviews from all over! |

The year was 1969. Gloria Diaz and the rest of the contest-ants in the Miss Universe Pageant all wear identical Catalina one piece bathing suits for the competition. The swimsuit of 30 years ago that looks tame compared to what we have today. Back then, they were not as 'highly cut' in the hip area as they eventually evolved into. Gloria looked great in her one piece which come to think of it, could pass for a pair of shorts today! |

Evangeline Pascual made headlines in the Philippines in 1973. Her towering physique and enviable statistics were a perfect match for the three color-one piece bathing suit she wore at the Miss Republic of the Philippines Pageant. She looked so good in it as if it was tailored for her that she took it with her to London and eventually almost won the crown. Today, the swimsuit still looks a smash! I say the piece looks like the hybrid of a one piece and a two piece anyway! Whoever designed this classic should also be in the history books. Even the colors are nationalistic, red, blue and white, the colors of the national flag! |

The Asian Mafia at Miss Universe 1988! Verdict? Only Miss Thailand looks good, no wonder she walked away with the title! The rest are pretty average, with the typical look of the 80's. Miss Thailand gives justice to the fabric but the rest are simply out of shape! Thunder thighs, bad skin, unproportion- al vital statistics, bad hair day, and the general lack of charisma. |

Even Miss Philippines Universe of '88, Perfida Limpin is out of shape! She would have looked a little better if she had toned her body before the pageant. |

Ruffa Gutierrez wore a one piece number at the pageant finals of the Miss World pageant in South Africa. She definitely looked good! With a body like hers, she can wear either one and still look ravishing. Had she competed in the Miss Universe Pageant on a later date, she would have given anybody a run for her money with her killer bod and Eurasian features! Ruffa, along with Nina, are perhaps the only two at this point who can give justice to the two piece bathing suit without coming off as raunchy and still meet beauty pageant standards. |

Charlene Gonzales was a hit during the 1994 Miss Universe Finals in Manila. Her one piece bathing suit earned her high points! Well styled hair, a fresh face, a good body and fair skin set off by the dark hue of the bathing suit all contributed to the winning look of the bathing suit! I guess the secret is to stand out and make an impact. If you are fair skinned, a darker shade will provide good contrast. In much the same way, a morena will look better in a light colored swimsuit. |

1996 Miss Photogenic at the Miss Universe Pageant is a stunner in the one piece she has chosen to wear!Though the hair is too big for today's standards, she could have used more trai- ning for projection and posture. The legs look a little bit short, a disadvantage definitely, consi- dering her competitors are the giants of the pageant world! |

Miss Universe 1999 First Runner-up and Clairol Herbal Essence Style Awardee Miriam Quiambao is the best Filipina to ever wear a bathing suit in the Miss Universe Pageant! Though she didn't have the perfect figure, she more than compen- sated for it by her poise, elegance and stage presence. Though the training in Caracas was definitely a plus, Miriam just needed it to polish what was already in her. Here is a woman who whatever she does and what- ever she wears, always comes out a win- ner! May we have more like her! |

Lalaine Edson went through a dramatic trans- formation right after she finished her training in Caracas for the Miss World Pageant. Back to her pre-winning the Binibini title, her swim-suit pictures were lacklustre and looked more like she just got out of college than as a con- tender for the Miss Philippines title!
Training in Osmel is like asking for a make-over. True enough, Lalaine was transformed from 'girl next door' to an 'Asian Enchantress' overnight. She definitely looks super in her leopard print one piece, probably the idea of Osmel. Never mind, she looks like a million bucks! This is testimony to the fact that pro- per packaging helps a lot! |

Ground shaking breakthrough! Finally, a Miss Philippines who was willing to take the plunge and go for the two piece bathing suit! Well, why not? Nina has the body, the looks, the 23 inch waistline, the modelling experience, the public exposure and above all the guts! Go girl and set the stage for this millenium's Miss Philippines! |

Nina's swimsuit stint in Cyprus got all sorts of mixed reactions. The Cypriot press and the audience liked her, judges and some pageant fans did not. What went wrong? For one, the hair was a mess-get rid of those extensions honey! The arms look awkward and there was the issue about too much make-up! Nina, what happened? |

May Nina set the stage for the new millenium's queens. May the stereotype that has come to be as- sociated with Asians be a thing of the past. I am for updating of the classic Asian idioms: reserved, quiet, does not complain, shy and easily embarrassed. With the likes of Nina, may Filipinas finally learn to over-come their inhibitions and express themselves more openly and get the recognition they deserve! |
