As rock and roll mania hits the world, another kind of fever gained moment-um in the Philippines.
The country was making waves in the international pageant arena with a string of major and minor victories. Prior to that, Miss Philippines was just another contestant who silently exited off the stage right after the semi-finalists were chosen. But cer- tainly not this decade, for this was no longer the 50's but the . . .

GLORIA DIAZ BECOMES THE FIRST FILIPINA TO BE CROWNED ***MISS UNIVERSE *** |
1969 Gloria Diaz wins the first Miss Universe crown for the Philippines! It really was a decade of firsts! The Philippines and it's debutante queens were making a debut appearance on the world's stage and everyone was starting to take notice! The dusky beauty wowed them all not only with her natural charm and exotic looks, but moreso for her wit and ability to answer questions without sounding like a rehearsed queen! |

Gloria comes from a big fa- mily and during the semi-finals interview, Bob Barker asked her to name all her siblings. Her reply was, "Shall I name them in alpha- betical order or by rank?" The audience roared after this! Well, she did try to name them all but missed one and Bob Barker even pointed that out. From here on, the crown was hers. Wearing an elegant terno and then showing off her Asian curves in a bathing suit, Gloria was a standout! |

1969 WAS THE YEAR MAN LANDED ON THE MOON... THIS IS WHAT GLORIA HAS TO SAY... "AMERICA CONQUERED THE MOON, BUT THE PHILIPPINES CONQUERED THE UNIVERSE!" |

The final question of the night: "In a few days, man will be land- ing on the moon; now if a man from the moon landed in your hometown, what would you do to entertain him?" Gloria without batting an eyelash replied, "Well, since he has been in the moon so long, I would do for him the same thing I would do for anybody, ask him if he wants a change." Ha, ha !!! Clever girl! While the other contestants were caught unaware, she was ready for it. Glorious Gloria conquered the universe! AMEN. |

Gloria goes home to the Philippines and what a glorious home- coming it was! What made it even better was the taste of vic- tory in the face of her detractors. After she won the Miss Philip- pines title, there were mixed reactions. Eve- ry body wanted a mestiza over a more-na! Well, she showed them, didn't she? It's not the color of the skin that makes you win!!! I definitely agree! Gloria, Gloria! |

Gloria Diaz Miss Philippines Miss Universe 1969 |
Fastforward to 1970 ! Gloria Diaz ,Miss Universe 1969 crowns the new Miss Universe of 1970, Marisol Malaret of Puerto Rico. Her parting words: "Remember, you are only Miss Universe for a year, but yourself for the rest of your life." So ends the reign of the first Filipina Miss Universe. The story does not end here, in fact this is only the beginning. . . . . |

GLORIA AFTER MISS UNIVERSE WHAT NOW? |
Gloria is now a suc- cessful actress in the Philippines. Still as beautiful as ever be-fore, her legacy of be- ing the first will never be forgotten. Queens may pass on their crowns, but those that make milestones will never be among the forgotten ones. |

What would happen if Gloria was born in this era and were to compete in Miss Universe? Is she going to win? Maybe yes, because true queens are born with that special 'something.' On the other hand, maybe she won't win because I am pretty sure she will never undergo through the hassle of 'redefinition.' |
