.....STARLIGHT
....STARBRIGHT

It's been 21 years since Miss Melanie Marquez won the
Philippines' 3rd Miss
International crown!
How fast time flies.
The 2000 Pageant is just around the corner and the question now is : How will Joanna Marie Penalosa fare against the beauty powerhouses of the Latin countries? Time to wish upon that star and once again shine,
Philippines! It's been such a looong time.

.....MISS UNIVERSE........ ......COUNTRY 1974

Amparo Munoz, Miss U '74 and  members of her court really became part of Philip-
pine culture when they fell to the lure of the local mo-
vie industry! Maureen Ava Viera, Miss Aruba (far left), starred  opposite  a basket ball athlete in a comedy film entitled "Miss Aruba Comes To Town."  Helen Morgan of  Wales  (2nd from left) also starred in a local film where she was one of the unfortunate victims of the hijacking  of a public  bus.

THE LITTLE MERMAID

Doll faced Johanna Raunio of Finland, above left, was the main star in a  movie opposite local comedian 'Chiquito' in the mermaid classic, 'Lorelei.' For  her part as the mermaid, Johanna had to wear a wig to cover her  private parts  and false rubber breasts  just  in case the  wind and the  sea did not cooperate! Amparo Munoz, who  was to be dethroned  before her reign  was over, later returned to the Philippines
and starred in a movie opposite - who else, Gloria Diaz, Miss Universe of 1969. The  only one who did not succumb to the lure of Philippine cinema was Colombia's Cecilia Escandon.

WHO IS THE FAIREST OF THEM ALL?

Binibining Pilipinas Universe 1996 Aileen Damiles at the Coronation Ball in honor of Miss Universe of 1996, Alicia Machado of Venezuela. What makes this photograph so interesting is that Aileen, a Filipina, is actually a shade or two fairer in skin tone than Alicia, a white Venezuelan! But wait, it gets better. Alicia Machado herself could pass for a Spanish Filipina mestiza! In today's muti-racial society, if the two beauty queens were to switch sashes, Aileen as Miss Venezuela and Alicia as Miss Philippines, the whole thing would still be perfectly believable! And why not? Both countries were once colonized by Spain!

FIRST THERE WAS NINA, NOW IT'S CRISTINA!
Pageant fans are deba-
ting whether Filipina Australian megamodel Cristina  Garcia is beauty queen material or  not. She  has the face, the confidence, the body, but unfortu-
nately, not the height!
A shortie at 5 feet and 6 inches, hmmm. . . could disappear behind the giants! Oh well, I guess you can't have everything, can you?

BINIBINI RELEASES JOANNA'S PROMOTIONAL PICTORIAL : PAGEANT FANS CRY, "FOUL !!!"
Joanna looks so naive in this pictorial. Her shyness and obvious lack of ease in front of the camera may be her greatest disadvantage. A beauty queen should be confi- dent of herself and know exactly who she is and what her title really means. A beauty queen should get used to the attention and the spotlight and not try to hide away from the public eye. Joanna, in these series of pictures, sad to say, though she is pretty indeed, lacks the essential appeal a beauty queen should have that makes her look interest- ing to look at. One look at these pictures and I am alrea- dy bored! Why does she look so plain here?

Joanna  looks great and so fresh in these pictures! Wow, dig that flawless, glowing skin and natural look untouched by the  surgeon's knife! Although  she does  need more toning in  her body, I personally  believe she is ready to conquer Tokyo given the right wardrobe and nothing from the 'Binibini Treasure Chest' please! I would love to see her compete and become the next Miss International.

DO
NOT BE SHY
CONFIDENCE IS THE KEY
I am so  disappointed with these photographs. Joanna could have benefited greatly from at least a two week training in Venezuela. Look at Lalaine Edson last year and see  how  she was  transformed  from 'simple' to 'sophisticated.' It just takes the right packaging to proper- ly  market a  beauty queen. Binibini  has  failed again, as usual.

Yes, I agree, Joanna looks so disturbingly drab and unat-tractive  in these  photographs; but the plain and honest truth is, she could  have  done better or  the Binibining Pilipinas organizers should have known better! I hate to see another pretty girl go to waste. Why can't they pack- age her like Venezuela does? A  beauty queen was meant to stand out, and  not  blend with the  rest of the  public. We are looking for  Cinderella dancing at the ball with  the prince, and  not the girl  whose  wicked stepmother keeps locked up in the basement! Geewheez, where on earth is that fairy godmother when you need her?

WILL  2000 BE THE YEAR WHEN THE PHILIPPINES WINS ITS 4TH
MISS INTERNATIONAL CROWN ?
A WORD FROM THE WEBMASTER It is not the intention of this website to put Joanna down, but rather to present the true and honest opinions of pageant fans. In the spirit of true democracy, both posi-
tive and negative comments should be presented for the sole purpose of 'TO CORRECT'  as opposed to
just merely 'TO CONDEMN.' Joanna is a gorgeous Miss Philippines and with the proper training, could have been worth even more. Alas, Binibini has chosen their outdated methods, and sad to say, "You get what you pay for." Who knows, Joanna might just wake up and smell the vinegar . . .
WHAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF

Famous commercial models (from left to right) Amanda  Griffin, Cristina  Garcia, and  Joey Mead are being eyed by most pageant fans as three potential Binibini contenders for the ma- jor  awards of 2001. In this fantasy computer enhanced 'coronation,' Amanda is Miss Philip-
pines  International,  Cristina  Garcia is  Miss Philippines Universe, and Joey is Miss Philip- pines  World. Too  much to  ask? The stuff dreams  are made of? These women are gor-
geous and world class! The only thing hinder-
ing  them from  becoming  possible  contenders
is : "Are they interested at all?" C'mon Amanda, Cristina and Joey, give it a try! Miss Philippines could certainly use a breath of fresh air.
