| January 16, 2003 Let's go to the email... Glenn, I have been invited to a party this weekend by a college girl who I'm good friends with . I am a recent graduate of the same college, and I suspect that I will be the only non-college student there. Can I go without feeling like a total tool? This question could only be asked by someone less than four years out of school. If a guy in his late twenties was invited to a party where there would be lots of attractive college girls, he would likely just drop to one knee and say "Bless you, father". Unfortunately, a recent grad has to worry about being seen as someone who couldn't let go, or even worse, the dreaded creepy older guy. Egads! If you went to a different college the answer would be different, but unfortunately I can't (ummm...I mean "you shouldn't") go. Glenn, why do you hate Road to Perdition so much? ***ATTENTION: SPOILER ALERT*** The cinematography and the acting is stellar. Unfortunately, the actions of Tom Hanks's character ring very false. Allegedly, his principle motivation is to protect his son and to keep him out of the family business. If that is the case, why not take Paul Newman's offer of money and move out of the country. He could live comfortably, keep his son safe and his hands clean, and could develop a bond with him? Why go off half cocked searching for revenge and putting his son's life at considerable risk? As it turns out, Hanks dies, and if it weren't for ridiculous plot contrivances, his son would be broke and homeless. This movie still makes me angry. Doesn't Peja Stojakovic look like the sloth from Ice Age? - Chris Unequivocally, yes. Compare Peja to Sid the Sloth. What happened to the Mavs last night in Sacramento? Are they through? Watching the game last night was tough - I would compare it to having my testicles slowly squeezed between the jaws of a vice clamp. The Mavs should get a boost when French star Antoine Rigaudeau joins the team. I've never seen him play, but by all accounts he is an intelligent veteran leader. That said, I think it is hard to argue against the Kings being the best team in the league. The Mavs absolutely need a victory when Sacramento visits Dallas February 4th. Glenn, play Vegas oddsmaker and give odds for the Democratic presidential candidates. I have a BA in Poli Sci, so humor me. Bush is still an odds on favorite for a second term, here are my odds for his likely opponent: Dick Gephardt 3-1 Joe Lieberman 3-1 John Edwards 5-1 John Kerry 5-1 Field 6-1 Bob Graham 8-1 Howard Dean 15-1 Al Sharpton Ain't happening Glenn, what was your favorite controversial news story last week? Without a doubt, it was George Ryan, the Republican governor of Illinois following his heart and commuting all Illinois death sentences to life in prison. I know I am firmly in the minority (even among the usually liberal younger crowd) but I'm firmly against the death penalty. I just don't believe the state, or a state sponsored court should be able to make that decision. It is one of the few positions that I beleive in that firmly aligns itself with the Catholic Church. Is this going to mark a huge change? No... it will open debate for a while, but lets look at the circumstances. This man was 68 years old, a day away from leaving office, and obviously not planning on running again. Until it becomes politically feasible in this country for a national politician to make abolishing the death penalty an issue, the United States will continue to have something in common with the so-called "Axis of Evil". Glenn, what is your favorite reality television trend? The new marriage-themed shows (The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, Joe Millionaire) all have a similar format. Twenty-odd singles vie for the attention of one member of the opposite sex. Out of the twentysome contestants, there are usually two minority candidates max. Now when it comes to cut time, there is always one guarantee. At least one minority candidate will make the first cut, but the minority candidates never, ever makes the second cut. This way, the series star doesn't come across as racist, but TV execs don't actually break any ground by haveing an interracial couple. There needs to be a betting line on something like this. I could make myself a killing. Glenn what have you learned about people from writing this column? You are all vain!!! Whenever people talk to me about my column, they always tell me there favorite part is something that relates to them! Of course I should talk...I am the one who writes a column all about me and actually expects others to read it. |

| NOTES & CORRECTIONS FROM YESTERDAY'S COLUMN Chris, on The Sweetest Thing - "Not even watching Cameron Diaz and Christina Applegate fondle each others breasts could keep me watching". I should have nominated Jude Law (Road to Perdition) and Eddie Izzard (The Cat's Meow) for best supporting actor. I egregiously forgot to rank a great Argentinian caper flick called Nine Queens. It would have been ranked at number 12. It was everything that David Mamet's Heist aspired to be. I can't believe I ranked Catch Me if You Can as highly as I did. The ending notes really annoyed me. You know how at the end of true stories, there are notes updating the status of the characters? Well, in Catch Me, the final note says that Frank (DiCaprio's character) and Carl (Hanks's character) are still close today. This is utterly ridiculous. Tom Hank's character is a composite of 6 real life figures! To make one composite character for cinematic purposes is fine, but why lie about his existence in a throwaway line at the end? Nearly ruined the whole movie for me. |
