After some heavy hints and the use of a milk crate as a step to assist climbing into the van, I bought an Omnistep.

Naturally it couldn't just be fitted under the sliding door step as the van wall takes up a third of the step and thus there isn't room for the four bolts.
So I welded up a couple of odd shapped brakets in angle iron so that the step is at the right height and supported by the van step at the front and the chassis at the back.
Once these were in place, it was relatively easy to drill some holes and bolt on the step. But since it has a warning light in case we drive off with it out, I had to feed another wire to the fascia and remove everything I thought finished to fit this up. Ho hum.
