Powers: Nightcrawler has the ability to teleport, with a flash of brimstone and
sulfur. He can travel mostly short distances and can not carry much more mass than
himself. He has a demonic appearance, can blend into darkness, has a prehensive tail,
three fingers and toes, and can stick to walls. He is also a swordsman and acrobat.
Origin: Only a baby in the arms of his mother, the mutant terroist Mystique, he
was thrown from her arms over a waterfall, as she hoped to save her own life from a mob.
Miracously, Nightcrawler survived, but relives the experience years later, when Professor
X saved him from a raging mob who believed him to be a demon. Taken by Xavier to the
states, Nightcrawler became part of the second generation of X-Men.
History: Despite his appearance, Nightcrawler was a light-hearted, kind soul.
He thrived with the X-Men, taking on the world besides his new friends, including Storm,
Colossus, and Wolverine. Later, the love of his life, his foster sister, Jimaine Szardos,
came back into his life. This time, calling herself Amanda Sefton, part-time flight
attendant, part-time sorceress. Although she never joined the X-Men, she often fought for
Xavier's dream.
Nightcrawler would stay with the X-Men for a long period of time, but then, disaster
struck. The Maruaders would storm the Morlock tunnels, and it would fall on the X-Men to
stop them. However, the Maruaders were pure evil, killing most of the Morlocks, and
gravely injuring Angel, Shadowcat, and Nightcrawler. Nightcrawler was forced to retire
from active duty, although he and Kitty remained at the mansion. His ability to teleport
had been taken from him.
However, lightning struck twice. The X-Men were fighting in Texas, to defeat the evil
Adversary, and they died, giving their souls to stop the evil god. Eventually,
Nightcrawler and Shadowcat left the mansion to help their friend Rachel Summers, now known
as Phoenix. Along with Captain Britain and Meggan, they formed Excalibur to continue
Xavier's dream overseas, in Europe.
Nightcrawler thrived in Excalibur and would eventually lead the team. He also perfected
the art of swordmanship and fell in love with the alien Shi'ar Cerise, after Amanda had
been absent for a long period. However, Cerise would eventually leave Earth for space,
ending their relationship. Later, Amanda would turn up on Excalibur's doorstep, calling
herself Daytripper. She joined the team, and she and Nightcrawler resumed their
relationship.
Excalibur would disband after the marriage of Meggan and Captain Britain, and by that
time, Colossus had joined the team. He, Shadowcat, and Nightcrawler decided the team was
right to return to the X-Men. The three joined a team of relative X-Men long-stays, with
the exception of Marrow, the new-comer.
However, Daytripper had gone missing. Nightcrawler searched for her, finding that his
foster mother, Margali Szardos, had replaced her to take her place as Belasco's slave.
Margali, like Amanda, was a sorceress of the Winding Way, a path to mystic power.
Nightcrawler, with Margali's help, freed Daytripper from her imprisonment. However,
Daytripper remained in Limbo, to protect the land from further abuse.
Nightcrawler entered the seminary part-time, trying to earn his priest-hood, being a
devout Catholic since his childhood. He found his faith, both in God and in Xavier's
dream. Even Amanda would return to his life, this time taking the role of Magik, guardian
of Limbo, armed with the former Magik's Soulsword.
But Nightcrawler's happiness was shattered when Shadowcat disappeared and Colossus
sacrificed his life to cure the Legacy Virus. Nightcrawler left the X-Men, hoping to find
peace. He would return to help lead the next version of X-Men, a team made of himself,
Wolverine, Archangel, Iceman, and Chamber. He remains with the X-Men. |
