Plot -
Rogue is ambushed by the former X-Man Sunfire for apparently no reason at all. The two
fight, while Sunfire confesses that he believes Rogue to be Mystique, who he also believes
is responsible for a murder. To convince him he's wrong, Rogue grabs the flame-thrower and
drags into the water, and tells that Mystique can also duplicate shapes, not powers.
Meanwhile, back at Mystique's apartment, Shadowcat watches over the sleeping
shape-shifter. She ponders over Rogue's childhood, raised by Mystique and her long-time
partnet Destiny, who was killed in a battle with the Shadow King. Shadowcat looks the old
pictures of the three, reliving Rogue's childhood through her own eyes. However, on the
back of one of the frames, she finds a cryptic message that can only be for her, telling
her to phase into the frame. Inside the frame, she finds the key to the future: Destiny's
diary. Meanwhile, back on the shore, Rogue shows Sunfire that Mystique couldn't have
committed the murders, because she was posing as Ronnie Lake, a super-model, in Europe
when the murderers took place. At Polaris's apartment, she and Nightcrawler go over
Polaris's feelings over the belief that Havok, her lover that is believed to be dead, is
still alive somewhere. Back at a warehouse, the duo of X-Men find a mysterious source
power watching over them. They decide to check it out. Meanwhile, Shadowcat goes through
the mysterious diary left for her by Destiny years before. Back at the warehouse, Rogue
and Sunfire attack their watchers, only to find the supposedly dead Mastermind and
Mesmero. Both confused and stunned, they realize they must truly be shape-shifters and are
also the ones who framed Mystique. Unbeknowst to them, the shape-shifters are really alien
Skrulls. The defeat the creatures, but the alien decide to stop the X-Men from finding
their secrets, so they destroy the building with themselves still inside. Rogue and
Sunfire make their escape. Back at the apartment, Shadowcat wonders what the diary's dark
prophecies mean for the future of the X-Men. Not far away, Nightcrawler says his good-byes
to Polaris, who then seals herself in her apartment with her powers and pulls out her last
remnant of Havok: his old costume. Later, at a park, Mystique, Rogue, and Shadowcat
talk over Rogue's future with the X-Men and Mystique's future. However, when Rogue
confesses her love for her foster mother, Mystique disappears into the crowd. Knowing they
couldn't find her, the two X-Men don't even try. However, Shadowcat reveals to Rogue the
diary that could change the X-Men forever. |
