การถามทิศทาง หรือถนนหนทางเป็นสิ่งจำเป็นต่อการเรียนรู้บทสนทนาภาษาอังกฤษ เราจึงจำเป็นต้องรู้จักทั้งวิธีถามและวิธีตอบ การถาม ก่อนอื่นต้องเรียกร้องความสนใจ (Calling attention) ของผู้ที่เราจะถามเสียก่อน จู่ๆ จะไปถามเขาอย่างนั้นอย่างนี้เลยไม่ได้ ถือเป็นการเสียมรรยาท เราควรเรียกความสนใจโดยพูดว่า
1.Excuse me. ขอโทษครับ
2.Excuse me, but
..(ต่อด้วยประโยคที่จะถาม) ขอโทษครับ แต่
3.Pardon me, but
..(ต่อด้วยประโยคที่จะถาม) ขอโทษครับ แต่
4.I beg your pardon, but

หลังจากเรียกร้องความสนใจ ของผู้ที่เราจะถามทิศทางแล้วจึงพูด ต่อด้วยประโยคคำพูดเหล่านี้
1.Can you direct me to the Grand Palace?
คุณช่วยกรุณาบอกทางไปพระบรมมหาราชวังหน่อยได้ไหมครับ
2.Can you tell me how to get to the Immigration Office? คุณช่วยกรุณาบอกวิธีที่จะไปกองตรวจคนเข้าเมืองหน่อยได้ไหมครับ
3.Can you tell me where the Post Office is?
คุณกรุณาช่วยบอกผมหน่อยว่าที่ทำการไปรษณีย์อยู่ที่ไหน

ในกรณีที่ไม่ทราบทิศทางเหล่านั้นก็ควรตอบว่า
1.Sorry. I'm afraid I can't. เสียใจครับผมตอบไม่ได้
2.I'm sorry. I'm a stranger here. ผมเสียใจครับ ผมเป็นคนแปลกหน้าที่นี่ครับ
ประโยคคำตอบที่เกี่ยวกับทิศทาง
1.Go straight. ตรงไป
2.Go straight ahead for a few buildings. ตรงไปข้างหน้าอีกช่วง 2-3 ตึก
3.Follow this street. ไปตามถนนเส้นนี้
4.Keep going straight. เดินตรงไปเรื่อย ๆ
5.Go straight until you come to the Police Station. ตรงไปข้างหน้าจนกระทั่งถึงสถานีตำรวจ
6.Turn left. เลี้ยวซ้าย
7.Turn right. เลี้ยวขวา
8.You have come too far. You must go back. คุณมาไกลเกินไป คุณต้องกลับไป
9.You had better take a taxi. คุณควรขึ้นรถแท็กซี่ไปดีกว่า
10.This way please. ทางนี้ครับ
11.Follow me, please. ตามผมมาครับ
12.Go up the street . เดินย้อนถนนเส้นนี้ขึ้นไป
13.Go down the street. เดินตามถนนเส้นนี้ลงไป
14.Go upstairs. ขึ้นบันไดไป

17.Walk to the first traffic lights. เดินไปจนถึงไฟจราจรแรก
18.Walk over the footbridge. เดินข้ามสะพานลอยคนข้ามไป
19.Walk to the end of this road. เดินไปจนสุดถนนเส้นนี้
20.Cross at the traffic lights. ข้ามที่สัญญาณไฟจราจร
21.It's 3 kilometers from here. ไปจากที่นี่ 3 กิโลเมตรครับ
22. It's next door to the foodshop. มันอยู่ติดกับร้านอาหารครับ
23.It's directly opposite the temple. มันอยู่ตรงข้ามกับวัดพอดีเลยครับ
24.It's about ten minutes walk from here. เดินไปประมาณ 10 นาทีจากที่นี่
25.Let me give the driver directions. ขอให้ผมบอกทางแก่คนขับรถเอง
26.Let me draw a map for you. ขอให้ผมวาดแผนที่ให้คุณ
27.I will write it in Thai for the driver. ผมจะเขียนเป็นไทยให้คนขับรถเองครับ
28.It should cost no more than 50 baht. มันไม่ควรจะคิดเกิน 50 บาทนะครับ
29.It's within walking distance. มันเป็นระยะทางที่เดินไปได้ครับ
30.It's too far to walk. มันไกลเกินไปที่จะเดินครับ
ข้อสังเกต คำว่า "ขึ้นรถ" กับ "ลงรถ" ขึ้นรถ = get on ลงรถ = get off
