Digimon: Digital Monsters Review.
One of my friends a few years back was obsessed with Pokemon. Now, she and I have similar taste in anime, so I told her to check out Digimon. She gave me a weird look and told me That show is just a stupid rip-off of Pokemon, only in Pokemon, all the monsters names dont end in Mon. Face it, that anime is really stupid.
Had we not had about thirty seconds to get to class, I would have told her the following: Yeah, well in Digimon, the creatures actually have minds of their own. You dont catch them and keep them in little balls, they can go between levels, can say more than their own name, and they fight EVIL, not some other stupid little creature that can only say its name. Now, does Pokemon have any of that? I dont think so.
Digimon is a totally awesome anime, full of all the stuff I just mentioned, and a ton more. The overall plot is original, and the characters are the coolest, cutest, and funniest in an anime involving tiny monsters that change shape. In the first season, there is a ton of character development. Rivalries, friendships, and traits that the Digidestined carry throughout the first two seasons appear. Plus, the Digimon have cute little transformation scenes, (Much like those seen in Sailor Moon) whenever they Digivolve, while in other anime, there may just be a bright flash of light and a little sound effect, and thats it. The story is easy to follow, even for morons like me, and just about everything about season one is loveable! I cant think of anything that was flawed with the first season of Digimon, except one thing: It wasnt as good as season two!!
Digimon, the second season, was pure genius. TK and Kari are now main characters, instead of the little kids no one listens to. The bad thing is that you dont see the older kids as much. I LOVE the older kids!!! But hey, we get a new goggle boy, and hes almost as funny, if not, funnier than Tai! Davis was MEANT to be the goggle boy! The title suits him so well! And the cute part of this season is that now, there are hundreds of Digidestined, instead of seven. They dont just fight Digimon in this season, either. First theres the Digimon Emperor, who later joins the Digidestined as Ken, who is just as cute and sweet as can be (Without becoming Matt, who will always be coolest and cutest!) And then theres Oikawa, who is just cool. He turns out so sweet at the end! But the best parts of both seasons are the relationships between the kids and their Digimon. The end of both seasons made me cry for the first several times I saw them. The movie was awesome, too! Not only did it provide a little background to the series, but it also provided a little more of a transition between the first two seasons, as if Tais little speech on the last episode of season one wasnt enough to give away that a second season was on its way. And one last thing on season 2; werent the little kids they all had the cutest things ever???
Of course, then they had to go and mess it all up with season three. I only watched, like three episodes, and they were too weird. First off, there were a TON of things that made no sense! These are just a few:
At the end of Season 2, TK states, Everyone knows about the Digimon. Then why would they make it so that NO ONE knows about them for season three?
After that, TK goes on to say that everyone has his or her own Digimon. Then why are the characters so Surprised that they have a Digimon partner?
Why do you need to promote the card game with the show? If people already LIKE the show, they probably have Digimon cards anyway!
How is it possible to CREATE a Digimon using a card and a drawing? And, using the cards makes it more Pokemon-ish. Using a card to Digivolve them, as well as boost power, attack, and a ton of other things sounds a lot like the poor Digimon doesnt have a mind of its own, like a Pokemon. I think that Takato kid should trade in his goggles for a Pokemon League hat, dont you?
Is it just me, or are the characters brattier than in seasons 1 and 2 as well? That Rika girl just got on my nerves. Seriously, shes like a female Matt, only Matt wasnt nearly as punk-ish as her. The only good thing about the characters is that the narrator has the same voice as Davis from season 2 and Takatos teacher has Karis season 2 voice. Other than that, its all just a bunch of stuck-up brats that are obsessed with a card game. The Digimon card game they have is like the Everquest for the U.S. Addictive to some, incredibly lame to others. I hated season 3. The lack of the original characters, the lack of transition between seasons, and the lack of anything that was remotely interesting that came from the first two seasons.
Oh God. This is where it really hits the fan. A FOURTH SEASON? I honestly think they screwed it up enough in the third one! Once again, there is no transition between seasons, and no characters that were there in previous seasons. I have seen parts of episodes from Digimon Frontier, and to say the least, the only thing I liked was the kid Tommys Voice (The same as Jim Hawking from Outlaw Star and Tsukasa from .Hack//Sign.) There are some who might disagree, but think about it, people! Kids from all over the damn world, (Only a select few, again) turning INTO A DIGIMON?! Im just thanking the creators for not deciding on a fifth season. (Unless the fifth season was about the really cute little kids that the seasons 1 and 2 characters had at the end of season 2!)
Overall, Digimon seasons 1 and 2 are worth a look I give them both 95% As. I love these seasons, and I hope you do, too. However, once I saw an episode or two of season three, realized that it will never be the same, and the Digimon I know and love is gone forever, and the abominations of 3 and 4 live on to haunt me. I give seasons three and four both 70% Ds, due to the fact that they were bad, but it was still Digimon. And if you happen to find yourself liking seasons 3 and 4, I have one thing to say: WHAT ON EARTH IS WRONG WITH YOU?!?!
