GREEN CHALLENGE

Are you aware from?.

  • Government, political and non-government organizations are united in environmental causes.
  • Information technology is being used to increase environmental public awareness.
  • Customers expect environmental assurance.
  • Green economics, affecting products and operations, takes on more and more importance.
  • Corporate environmental issues and public health issues are increasingly linked.
  • High-quality, effective environmental standards are finding a strong base.

Green communication in a new paradigm!!.

Preparing to deal with these realities, and to turn them into economic and business opportunity, companies throughout the world -- and especially companies operating in economically developed countries in Europe, where the thrust of environmental trends will be the strongest -- will move toward a new paradigm: the high environmental performance organization which relies on environmental management linked to business mission.

Communication will be an increasingly important factor in the success of the high environmental performance organization.

Briefly, the trends will give rise to innovation and intense focus on stakeholders most vital to the organization: customers, stockholders, neighbors, government and the media, including new technology media. For example:

  • Environmental matters have moved considerably, and will move further still, from first-tier, and now relatively gross issues (swimmable rivers, observable industrial emissions, odor and observable particulate pollution).
  • Communication between company and publics has moved in a few short decades from delivering information (for example, to employees regarding environmental caution) on a "need-to-know" basis, toward interactive communication on a "right-to-know" basis.

In the Europe, a trend has begun that will grow in all developed nations, where this "right" to information is part of environmental, health and safety laws. Consequently, corporate environmental communication must now recognize that the next perceived right, is for various publics and stakeholders to participate in the corporate decision process, with regard to environment, health and safety.

Environment – including but moving beyond air, water and land pollution -- will also be increasingly linked to personal or public health. The merging of technical, scientific, chemical and agricultural questions with environmental protection is already occurring in Europe. For example, the so-called endocrine disrupters question and genetic engineering are issues with complex communication challenges, and approaches must be structured to deal with personally perceived risks.

Corporate communicators will in the years just ahead encounter recurring states of high concern among key stakeholders with a concomitant internal communication state of reduced or low credibility. Our LCE_Software and Consulting Inc. is specifically geared to these high-concern/low-credibility conditions.

This counsel is different from "crisis" communication, also handled by LCE_Software and Consulting Inc. where the emphasis is on immediate, aggressive and competent handling of environmental incidents and scares. Risk communication provides a model approach which uses research and communication platforms over time and results in improved, sustainable communication to address concern and increase credibility. It is an important aspect of corporate reputation management.

"Environmental protection" is now established as a core value or belief in the developed world. Environmental assurance, waste minimization and protection of human health (with emphasis on children and older people) have taken their place alongside such expectations as safety, quality and availability in products, services and corporate conditions. As a result, corporate communication will need to factor environmental sensitivity and commitment into every public outreach, as well as internal or employee communication. Our communication counsel to companies, as well as to government and public-sector organizations, advises on appropriate levels and devices, based on research and benchmarking data.

Companies will, because of economic as well as social responsibility factors, rationalize their environmental standards in various world settings. Pressure from government, competitors, public activists, employees, the news media and other publics will increase and be variously challenging.

Our
consulting extends beyond corporate counsel or conflict resolution to longer term, highly interactive communication methods -- ranging from community advisory discussion groups to Internet and related information technology -- to build trust through transparency and open relationships.

Effective environmental communication strategies rely on the principle of generating multiple options that benefit all stakeholders, and on solving problems at the lowest and least contentious levels practicable. Within our consultancies are former specialists in government and environmental regulatory agencies, who provide knowledgeable counsel to our clients.

Environmental reports -- public reporting on corporate philosophy, action and plans -- are growing as a basic part of corporate environmental communication in developed nations. Initiatives that describe commitments, progress and remaining challenges give the corporation levels of control, open examination, opportunities for reputation development and heightened credibility.
