aga khan urges correct use of koran teachings

london, tuesday

the aga khan at the weekend spoke about freedom of interpretation as a "generosity which the holy koran confers upon all believers".

he also spoke of what was needed to assure "the growth of future generations of our intelligentsia, so that we strengthen our own capacity to determine our destiny".

in a keynote address at an international meeting entitled "word of god, art of man: the koran and its creative expressions," the aga khan, spiritual leader of the the shia ismaili muslims, said: "the revelation granted to the holy prophet muhammad opened new horizons and released new energies of mind and spirit."

it was, he said, a message "still potent in the muslim world today, although it is sometimes clouded over, distorted and deformed by political interests and by struggles for power over the minds and hearts of people."

TUESDAY, APRIL 8, 2003 LA CROIX

KAK: I pay attention to this pluralism of traditions. I situate my actions in the context of the [current] times.  My grandfather gave, and I have myself given, a certain interpretation to Shiism. The intellect is seen as a facet of faith, in the service of faith. Reason, reflection, form part of the process of decision making. This reflection is wished, is necessary in the interpretation of religion. This is one of the elements which has made it possible for the Ismaili Community to respond to the problems of [the modern world].

The Imam of the Shia Ismailis Prince Karim Aga Khan IV is the Spiritual Leader (Imam) of the Shia Ismaili Muslims. At 20, in 1957, he succeeded his grandfather, the Aga Khan III. Born in Switzerland, living in France, 49th generation descendant of Prophet Muhammad, Karim Aga Khan completed his studies at Harvard University in America.

when was the christ, jesus
son of mary [pbuth] born?

salaamun alaykum, š³lôm, peace, peace be upon you and ya ali madad

rest assured, if there was one thing that had divided the jewish, the christian and the muslim worlds right in the middle for all these centuries past, it was jesus' unfathomable divinity/trinity and  the above controversy.

Aga Khan Speaks on Education and
the Future of the Ummah

Eliminate forever today's dangerous clash of ignorance

His Highness the Aga Khan, Chancellor of the Aga Khan University,

Karachi, Pakistan, 6th December, 2003 - .....  The Aga Khan felt that those with an educated and enlightened approach are "of the firm and sincere conviction that their societies can benefit from modernity while remaining true to tradition." "They," said the Aga Khan, " will be the bridge which can eliminate forever today's dangerous 'clash of ignorance' ... where peoples of different faiths or cultural traditions are so ignorant of each other that they are unable to find a common language with which to communicate."

"Muslim universities," said the Aga Khan, "have a unique responsibility: to engender in their societies a new confidence ... based on intellectual excellence, but also on a refreshed and enlightened appreciation of the scientific, linguistic, artistic and religious traditions that underpin and give such global value to our own Muslim civilisations - even though it may be ignored or not understood by parts of the Ummah itself."

King receives the Aga Khan

His Majesty King Hamad last night received at Rawdah Palace the spiritual leader of the Ismaili Muslims, the Aga Khan.

Noting the diversity of interpretation in Islam, the Aga Khan underlined that "anyone who recognises the Shahada is a Muslim and we are all brothers and sisters who should work together to build a common future." It is essential, he stressed, that "we all come together in a common space for reflection to make solutions applicable and available to all people."  December 7, 2003     Headline: Aga Khan pledges enhanced support for Chitral -- Detail Story :

the new testament
submitting to the 'will of god'

Matthew 12:50 (KJV) For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother. Matthew 28:10 (KJV) Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me. Luke 8:21 (KJV) And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.

John 20:17 (KJV) Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and [to] my God, and your God. Hebrews 6:20 (KJV) Whither the forerunner is for us entered, [even] Jesus, made an high <gadowl> priest <kohen>--imam -- for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

['islam' means 'submission to the will of allah']

with this 'common language' namely, the scriptural foundation, we shall now look at the following.

19) Sūrat Maryam

RAHMAN

Exodus 34:6 (KJV) And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,

'Maryam - `Īsaá Abnu Maryama
Mary -- Jesus, son of Mary [pbuth] -
1.    'Āyatan Lilnnāsi Wa Raĥmatan Minnā
a revelation for mankind and a mercy from Us

2.    Raĥmatan Lil`ālamīna -- mercy for the peoples'

Wa Mā 'Arsalnāka 'Illā Raĥmatan Lil`ālamīna (21 Al-'Anbyā' :107).

We sent thee not save as a mercy for the peoples.

3.    'Imāmāan Wa Raĥmatan -- THE IMAAM -- priest <kohen> and a mercy'

Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

'Afaman Kāna `Alaá Bayyinatin Min Rabbihi Wa Yatlūhu Shāhidun Minhu Wa Min Qablihi Kitābu Mūsaá 'Imāmāan Wa Raĥmatan 'Ūlā'ika Yu'uminūna Bihi Wa Man Yakfur Bihi Mina Al-'Aĥzābi Fālnnāru Maw`iduhu Falā Takun Fī Miryatin Minhu 'Innahu Al-Ĥaqqu Min Rabbika Wa Lakinna 'Akthara An-Nāsi Lā Yu'uminūna (11) Sūrat Hūd 17).

Is he who relieth on a MANIFEST PROOF from his Lord, and a WITNESS FROM HIM reciteth it, and before it was the Book of Moses, the IMAAM and a mercy ? Such believe in him, and whoso disbelieveth in him of the clans, the Fire is his appointed place. So be not thou in doubt concerning it. Lo! he is is the Truth from thy Lord; but most of mankind believe not.

[the qur'anic foundation of the true islam]

 the bible

Matthew 1:16 (KJV) And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. Matthew 1:18 (KJV) Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

And had chosen seclusion from them. Then We sent unto her Our Spirit and it assumed for her the likeness of a perfect man.

Qālat 'Innī 'A`ūdhu Bir-Raĥmani Minka 'In Kunta Taqīyāan (18).

She said: Lo! I seek refuge in the RAHMAN One from thee, if thou art God-fearing.

Qāla 'Innamā 'Anā Rasūlu Rabbiki Li'haba Laki Ghulāmāan Zakīyāan (19).

He said: I am only a messenger of thy Lord, that I may bestow on thee a faultless son.

Qālat 'Annaá Yakūnu Lī Ghulāmun Wa Lam Yamsasnī Basharun Wa Lam 'Aku Baghīyāan (20).

She said: How can I have a son when no mortal hath touched me, neither have I been unchaste ?

Qāla Kadhāliki Qāla Rabbuki Huwa `Alayya Hayyinun Wa Linaj`alahu 'Āyatan Lilnnāsi Wa Raĥmatan Minnā Wa Kāna 'Amrāan Maqđīyāan (21).

He said: So (it will be). Thy Lord saith: It is easy for Me. And that We may make of him a revelation for mankind and a mercy from Us, and it is a thing ordained.

Faĥamalat/hu Fāntabadhat Bihi Makānāan Qaşīyāan (22).

And she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a far place.

Fa'ajā'ahā Al-Makhāđu 'Ilaá Jidh`i An-Nakhlati Qālat Yā Laytanī Mittu Qabla Hādhā Wa Kuntu Nasyāan Mansīyāan (23).

And the pangs of childbirth drove her unto the trunk of the palm-tree. She said: Oh, would that I had died ere this and had become a thing of naught, forgotten!

Fanādāhā Min Taĥtihā 'Allā Taĥzanī Qad Ja`ala Rabbuki Taĥtaki Sarīyāan (24).

Then (one) cried unto her from below her, saying: Grieve not! Thy Lord hath placed a rivulet beneath thee,

Wa Huzzī 'Ilayki Bijidh`i An-Nakhlati Tusāqiţ `Alayki Ruţabāan Janīyāan (25).

And shake the trunk of the palm-tree toward thee, thou wilt cause ripe dates to fall upon thee.

So eat and drink and COOL THINE EYE. And if thou meetest any mortal, say: Lo! I have vowed a fast unto the RAHMAN, and may not speak this day to any mortal.

Fa'atat Bihi Qawmahā Taĥmiluhu Qālū Yā Maryamu Laqad Ji'ti Shay'āan Farīyāan (27).

Yā 'Ukhta Hārūna Mā Kāna 'Abūki Amra'a Saw'in Wa Mā Kānat 'Ummuki Baghīyāan (28).

O sister of Aaron! Thy father was not a wicked man nor was thy mother a harlot.

Fa'ashārat 'Ilayhi Qālū Kayfa Nukallimu Man Kāna Fī Al-Mahdi Şabīyāan (29).

Then she pointed to him. They said: How can we talk to one who is in the cradle, a young boy ?

Qāla 'Innī `Abdu Allāhi 'Ātāniya Al-Kitāba Wa Ja`alanī Nabīyāan (30).

He spake: Lo! I am the slave of Allah. He hath given me the Scripture and hath appointed me a Prophet,

Wa Ja`alanī Mubārakāan 'Ayna Mā Kuntu Wa 'Awşānī Biş-Şalāati Wa Az-Zakāati Mā Dumtu Ĥayyāan (31).

And hath made me blessed wheresoever I may be, and hath enjoined upon me prayer and almsgiving so long as I remain alive,

Wa Barrāan Biwālidatī Wa Lam Yaj`alnī Jabbārāan Shaqīyāan (32).

And (hath made me) dutiful toward her who bore me, and hath not made me arrogant, unblest.

Wa As-Salāmu `Alayya Yawma Wulidtu Wa Yawma 'Amūtu Wa Yawma 'Ub`athu Ĥayyāan (33).

and Peace on me the day I was born, and the day I die, and the day I shall be raised alive!

Dhālika `Īsaá Abnu Maryama Qawla Al-Ĥaqqi Al-Ladhī Fīhi Yamtarūna (34).

Such was Jesus, son of Mary: (this is) a statement of the truth concerning which they doubt.

Mā Kāna Lillāhi 'An Yattakhidha Min Waladin Subĥānahu 'Idhā Qađaá 'Amrāan Fa'innamā Yaqūlu Lahu Kun Fayakūnu (35).

It befitteth not (the Majesty of) Allah that He should take unto Himself a son. HOLINESS - Glory be to Him! When He decreeth a thing, He saith unto it only: Be! and it is.

Wa 'Inna Allāha Rabbī Wa Rabbukum Fā`budūhu Hādhā Şirāţun Mustaqīmun (36).

And lo! Allah is my Lord and your Lord. So serve Him. That is the right path.

 19. 26:
  C2478.
Cool thine eye: An idiom for "comfort thyself and be glad". The literal meaning should not, however, be lost sight of. She was to cool her eyes (perhaps full of tears) with the fresh water of the rivulet and take comfort that a remarkable babe had been born to her. She was also to look around, and if any one came near, she was to decline all conversation. It was quite true: she was under a vow, and could not talk to any one.
C2479. She was to decline all conversation with man or woman, on the plea of a vow to Allah. The "fast" here does not mean abstinence literally from eating and drinking. She has just been advised to eat the dates and drink of the stream.
Yusuf Ali's Commentary from QuranTrans

within the qur'anic 'revelation and example' of  the messiah, jesus son of mary [pbuth] is embedded the 'SPIRIT, the SPIRITUAL PATH & GUIDANCE' to the true islam as revealed in the holy qur'an.

Wa 'Inna Allāha Rabbī Wa Rabbukum Fā`budūhu Hādhā Şirāţun Mustaqīmun (19) Sūrat Maryam 36).

And lo! Allah is my Lord and your Lord. So serve Him. That is the right path.

also within the same is contained 'GUIDANCE' - to the DIVINE PATH of LIGHT -- 'Nūrun `Alaá Nūrin - Light upon light' and the higher truth - namely, 'the truth manifest - Al-Ĥaqqu Al-Mubīnu.' Wa Ya`lamūna 'Anna Allāha Huwa Al-Ĥaqqu Al-Mubīnu (24:25) - and they will know that Allah, He is the  Truth Manifest.'

24) An-Nūr -- LIGHT

Wa Laqad 'Anzalnā 'Ilaykum 'Āyātin Mubayyinātin Wa Mathalāan Mina Al-Ladhīna Khalaw Min Qablikum Wa Maw`ižatan Lilmuttaqīna (34).

And verily We have sent down for you MANIFEST REVELATIONS, and the example of those who passed away before you. An admonition unto those who ward off (evil).

Allāhu Nūru As-Samāwāti Wa Al-'Arđi Mathalu Nūrihi Kami....  Nūrun `Alaá Nūrin Yahdī Allāhu Linūrihi Man Yashā'u Wa Yađribu Allāhu Al-'Amthāla Lilnnāsi Wa Allāhu Bikulli Shay'in `Alīmun (35).

Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The similitude of His light is as .... Light upon light. Allah guideth unto His light whom He will. And Allah speaketh to mankind in allegories, for Allah is Knower of all things.

Laqad 'Anzalnā 'Āyātin Mubayyinātin Wa Allāhu Yahdī Man Yashā'u 'Ilaá Şirāţin Mustaqīmin (46).

Verily We have sent down MANFIEST REVEALTIONS. Allah guideth whom He will unto a straight path.

Qul 'Aţī`ū Allāha Wa 'Aţī`ū Ar-Rasūla ...... Mā `Alaá Ar-Rasūli 'Illā Al-Balāghu Al-Mubīnu (54).

Say: Obey Allah and obey the messenger. ..... But the messenger hath no other charge than to proclaim the manifest.

4) An-Nisā'

Yā 'Ayyuhā An-Nāsu Qad Jā'akum Burhānun Min Rabbikum Wa 'Anzalnā 'Ilaykum Nūrāan Mubīnāan (174).

O mankind! Now hath a MANIFEST PROOF from your Lord come unto you, and We have sent down unto you a LIGHT MANIFEST;

Fa'ammā Al-Ladhīna 'Āmanū Billāhi Wa Ā`taşamū Bihi Fasayudkhiluhum Fī Raĥmatin Minhu Wa Fađlin Wa Yahdīhim 'Ilayhi Şirāţāan Mustaqīmāan (175).

As for those who believe in Allah, and hold fast unto Him, them He will cause to enter into His mercy and grace, and will guide them unto Him by a straight road.

33) Al-'Aĥzāb

Yā 'Ayyuhā An-Nabīyu 'Innā 'Arsalnāka Shāhidāan Wa Mubashshirāan Wa Nadhīrāan (33:45).

O Prophet! Lo! We have sent thee as a witness and a bringer of good tidings and a warner.

Wa Dā`īāan 'Ilaá Allāhi Bi'idhnihi Wa Sirājāan Munīrāan (33:46).

And as a summoner unto Allah by His permission, and as a lamp that giveth light.

33. 46:
C3735. See last note. The two other capacities in which the Prophet was sent are here specified. (4) He comes as one who has a right to invite all men to repentance and the forgiveness of sins: but he does this, not of his own authority, but by the permission and authority given to him by Allah. This is said lest people may deify the Prophet as they did with other Prophets before him. The personal responsibility of each individual remains, but the Prophet can lead him on the Right and help him. (5) The Prophet also comes as a Light or a Lamp (Siraj) to illuminate the whole world. In lxxi. 16 and elsewhere the same word (Siraj) is used for the sun. The comparison is apt. When the sun appears, all the lesser lights pale before its light. And the Message of Islam, i.e., of the Universal Religion, is to diffuse Light everywhere.
Yusuf Ali's Commentary from QuranTrans

98) Sūrat Al-Bayyinah

Lam Yakuni Al-Ladhīna Kafarū Min 'Ahli Al-Kitābi Wa Al-Mushrikīna Munfakkīna Ĥattaá Ta'tiyahumu Al-Bayyinatu (1).

Those who disbelieve among the People of the Scripture and the idolaters could not have left off (erring) till the clear proof came unto them,

Rasūlun Mina Allāhi Yatlū Şuĥufāan Muţahharatan (2).

A messenger from Allah, reading purified pages

Fīhā Kutubun Qayyimatun (3).

Containing correct scriptures.

Wa Mā Tafarraqa Al-Ladhīna 'Ūtū Al-Kitāba 'Illā Min Ba`di Mā Jā'at/humu Al-Bayyinatu (4).

Nor were the People of the Scripture divided until after the clear proof came unto them.

Wa Mā 'Umirū 'Illā Liya`budū Allāha Mukhlişīna Lahu Ad-Dīna Ĥunafā'a Wa Yuqīmū Aş-Şalāata Wa Yu'utū Az-Zakāata Wa Dhalika Dīnu Al-Qayyimati (5).

And they are ordered naught else than to serve Allah, keeping religion pure for Him, as men by nature upright, and to establish worship and to pay the poor-due. That is true religion.

98. 1:
C6221. The People of the Book immediately referred to are the Jews and the Christians, who had received scriptures in the same line of prophecy in which came our holy Prophet. Their scriptures should have prepared them for the advent of the greatest and last of the Prophets. For the Jewish scriptures promised to the Jews, cousins or brethren to the Arabs, a prophet like Moses: "The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken" (Deut, xviii. 15). And Christ promised a Comforter (John. xiv. 16; xv. 26; and xvi. 7; see my n. 5438 to lxi. 6) almost by name. The People of the Book fell from the true, straight, and standard religion, into devious ways, and would not come to the true Path until (they said) they were convinced by the arrival of the promised Prophet. But when the promised Prophet came in the person of Muhammad, they rejected him, because they really did not seek for Truth but only followed their own fancies and desires.

C6222. The Polytheists, the Pagans, had not previously believed in any scriptures. But yet, when clear evidence came to them, they should have believed. Yet they rejected the holy Prophet because they were not really searching for Truth, but were only following their own fancies and desires.
C6223. The Clear Evidence was the holy Prophet himself, his life, his personality, and his teaching.98. 3:

C6225. Cf. lxxx. 13-16.

the bible

John 1:6 (KJV) There was a man sent from God, whose name [was] John. John 1:7 (KJV) The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all [men] through him might believe. John 1:8 (KJV) He was not that Light, but [was sent] to bear witness of that Light. John 1:9 (KJV) [That] was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

Luke 1:5 (KJVSL) There was in the days of Herod the king of Judaea  a certain priest <hiereus> named Zacharias <Zacharias>, of the course of Abia <Abia>: and his wife <gune> [was] of the daughters <thugater> of Aaron <Aaron>, and her name [was] Elisabeth. Luke 1:6 (KJVSL) And they were both righteous <dikaios> before <enopion> God <theos>, walking in all the commandments <entole> and  ordinances <dikaioma> of the Lord <kurios> blameless <amemptos>.

Here note, that Zacharias, a priest, and attending the service of the temple, was a married person, having one of the daughters of Aaron to wife, according to the command of God, Le 21:14 where the priest is required to marry one of his own people.

2. John, who was another Elias and appointed to be the herald of Christ, coming from the family of Aaron, and of two famous and blameless parents, has shown in his conception

Had a wife of the daughters of Aaron. Elisabeth also was of priestly family.

And he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron. The Baptist was of the priestly race by both parents, a family distinction much esteemed among the Jews. He who was thus doubly a priest proclaimed Him who changed the priesthood.

And her name was Elisabeth. She was named after her ancestress Elisheba, the wife of Aaron.

the christian pilgrimage: scriptural fact or fiction

Proverbs 26:1 (KJV) As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool.

Pr 26:1-28.
   1. The incongruities of nature illustrate also those of the moral world. The fool's unworthiness is also implied (Pr 17:7; 19:10).

Note, 1. It is too common a thing for honour to be given to fools, who are utterly unworthy of it and unfit for it. Bad men, who have neither wit nor grace, are sometimes preferred by princes, and applauded and cried up by the people. Folly is set in great dignity, as Solomon observed, Ec 10:6. 2. It is very absurd and unbecoming when it is so. It is an incongruous as snow in summer, and as great a disorder in the commonwealth as that is in the course of nature and in the seasons of the year; nay, it is as injurious as rain in harvest, which hinders the labourers and spoils the fruits of the earth when they are ready to be gathered

we will insha'allah look at the  issue at hand, mainly from a christian perspective and sources only, leaving aside all sectarian and fancy interpretations put forth by some of the most enthusiastic anti-islam christian institutions of higher learning, [Friends of Israel; Jerry Fallwell ; Pat Robertson  Althea Bishard - ; Rebecca Morgan] church leaders [self-proclaimed jackass]; and their followers, etc.

Working to Conquer the Religious Freedom 'Grinches'

The anti-religion Grinches are out in full force this Christmas season. In fact, Christmas has become a dirty word in many areas of society as groups like the American Civil Liberties Union and Americans United for Separation of Church and State continue to instill their vision of a Godless public square on our nation.

Dear Christopher,

Thank you for your kind words. I have read your fairly impressive and
captivating web-page. It is also nice to see that you and your angel guide
agree with the Qur'anic narrative re: Jesus' birth. The Lucan account 2:1-10
cited earlier, also corroborates the Qur'anic rendition.

    DOCTRINAL STATEMENT:

I prefer that you also read What I Believe via the KJV.

    1. The Word of God is 100% without error in the Words and thoughts in the Textus Receptus of the Greek, and in the last Bible for this age, The King James Bible 1611.  God's preservation of His Word today is as absolute and supernatural as the inspiration of the original manuscripts.

Editor and Jack Ass in General:

Steve Van Nattan  [http://www.balaams-ass.com/journal/believe.htm] THINGS IN GENERAL

I have NO creed but the King James Bible

The Gospel is everlasting, delivered ONCE, and it is of only ONE kind:

AND THE FROST BY NIGHT

Ge 31:40 Thus I was; in the day the drought consumed me, AND THE FROST BY NIGHT
and my sleep departed from mine eyes.

Luke 2:5 (KJV) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great
with child. Luke 2:6 (KJV) And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. Luke 2:7 (KJV) And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

'ABIDING IN THE FIELD, KEEPING WATCH OVER THEIR FLOCK BY NIGHT'

Luke 2:8 (KJV) And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. Luke 2:9 (KJV)   Luke 2:12 (KJV) And this [shall be] a sign unto you; Ye shall find the    babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. Luke 2:13 (KJV) And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Luke 2:14 (KJV) Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.  Luke 2:15 (KJV) And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem,   Luke 2:16 (KJV) And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
Luke 2:18 (KJV) And all they that heard [it] wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. Luke 2:20 (KJV) And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

the 'divine revelation'

not only does the new testament speak for itself, but also this is the only historical record regarding his birth, which, no christian authority or institution had ever challenged.

but more importantly, this biblical account corroborates the qur'anic account cited above. so, if the biblical account was a 'divine revelation' then what does it say about the qur'anic account itself?

contradiction

the new testament contradicts the christian tradition of christmas, the purported date of jesus' birth and celebration.

   Song of Solomon 2:11 (KJV) For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over [and] gone;

Matthew 24:20 (KJV) But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:

Mark 13:18 (KJV) And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter.

John 10:22 (KJV) And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter.

1 Corinthians 16:6 (KJV) And it may be that I will abide, yea, and winter with you, that ye may bring me on my journey whithersoever I go.

2 Timothy 4:21 (KJV) Do thy diligence to come before winter

Acts 28:2 (KJV) And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.

When was Jesus Born?

Best Guess: September 29, 5 B.C.

Want the details? Read more below.

Biblical scholars readily tell us that it was most likely NOT on December 25th, A.D. 0. Why?

When were shepherds in the fields?

Israeli meteorologists tracked December weather patterns for many years and concluded that the climate in Israel has been essentially constant for at least the last 2,000 years. The Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible states that, "broadly speaking, weather phenomena and climatic conditions as pictured in the Bible correspond with conditions as observed today" (R.B.Y. Scott, Vol. 3, Abingdon Press, Nashville, 1962, p. 625).

The temperature in the area of Bethlehem in December averages around 44 degrees Fahrenheit (7 degrees Celsius) but can drop to well below freezing, especially at night. Describing the weather there, Sara Ruhin, chief of the Israeli weather service, noted in a 1990 press release that the area has three months of frost: December with 29 F. [minus 1.6 C.]; January with 30 F. [minus 1.1 C.] and February with 32 F. [0 C.].

Snow is common for two or three days in Jerusalem and nearby Bethlehem in December and January. These were the winter months of increased precipitation in Christ's time, when the roads became practically unusable and people stayed mostly indoors.

This is important evidence to disprove a December date for Christ's birth. Note that, at the time of Christ's birth, the shepherds tended their flocks in the fields at night. "Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields," wrote one Gospel writer, "keeping watch over their flock by night" (Luke 2:8). A common practice of shepherds was keeping their flocks in the field from April to October, but in the cold and rainy winter months they took their flocks back home and sheltered them.

One commentary admits that, "as these shepherds had not yet brought home their flocks, it is a presumptive argument that October had not yet commenced, and that, consequently, our Lord was not born on the 25th of December, when no flocks were out in the fields; nor could He have been born later than September, as the flocks were still in the fields by night. On this very ground the nativity in December should be given up. The feeding of the flocks by night in the fields is a chronological fact, which casts considerable light upon this disputed point" (Adam Clarke's Commentary, Abingdon Press, Nashville, note on Luke 2:8).

God's Kingdom Ministries:  We will show in this booklet the evidence that Jesus was born in 2 B.C. at the time of Israel’s Feast of Trumpets (Rosh Hashana), which fell on September 29 that year. Two thousand years later is 1999 A.D. (Remember, since there is no year zero, two thousand years from 2 B.C. comes to 1999, rather than 1998 A.D.)

abiding in the field, watching over their flock by night:

Matthew 24:20 (KJV) But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:

2 Timothy 4:21 (KJV) Do thy diligence to come before winter. Eubulus greeteth thee, and Pudens, and Linus, and Claudia, and all the brethren.

from whence it appears, that Christ was born in the night; IT IS NOT LIKELY THAT HE WAS BORN, as is commonly received,
at the latter end of December, in the depth of winter;
since at this time, shepherds were out in the fields,
where they lodged all night, watching their flocks:
=

LU 2:8 abiding in the fields--staying there, probably in huts or
tents. watch . . . by night--or, night watches, taking their turn of
watching.

FROM ABOUT PASSOVER TIME IN APRIL UNTIL AUTUMN, the flocks pastured constantly in the open fields, the shepherds lodging there all that time. (From this it seems plain that the period of the year usually assigned TO OUR LORD'S BIRTH IS TOO LATE). Were these shepherds chosen to have the first sight of the blessed Babe without any respect of their own state of mind?

they were diligent men, that looked well to their flocks, and watched
them by night, as well as by day, to preserve them from beasts of
prey; they were, as it is in the Greek text, "KEEPING THE WATCHES OF THE NIGHT OVER THEIR FLOCK."

Abiding in the field. Remaining out of doors, under the open sky, with
their flocks. This was commonly done. THE CLIMATE WAS MILD, and, to keep their flocks from straying, they spent the night with them. It is also a fact that the Jews sent out their flocks into the mountainous
and desert regions during the summer months, and took them up in the
LATTER PART OF OCTOBER OR THE FIRST OF NOVEMBER, WHEN THE COLD WEATHER COMMENCED. While away in these deserts and mountainous regions, it was proper that there should be some one to attend them to keep them from straying, and from the ravages of wolves and other wild beasts.

IT IS PROBABLE FROM THIS THAT OUR SAVIOUR WAS BORN BEFORE THE 25TH OF DECEMBER, OR
BEFORE WHAT WE CALL CHRISTMAS. At that time it is cold, and especially in the high and mountainous regions about Bethlehem. BUT THE EXACT TIME OF HIS BIRTH IS UNKNOWN; there is no way to ascertain it. By different learned men it has been fixed at each month
in the year.
