A Comparison of Different Translations

Not all translation of the Qur-an is the same. Not all translations match the Arabic Qur-an in rhythm of text, depth of meaning, syntax of sentences, word usage and adherence to the divine words. While some translations are truly loyal to actual Arabic words, some are liberal in bringing out the meaning of the verses. Some translations are truly academic in nature, while others are informative in their objective. Some translators disliked strict loyalty to each and every Arabic words, for fear of obscuring the inherent meaning; while others were vehemently loyal to the revelation, yet succeeded in conveying the meaning. Some translators enjoyed slight liberty with choice of words, while others guarded themselves from what could very well be interpolation of thoughts. Below are sample of 6 translations of Surah Baqarah, arranged verse by verse. The purpose is here is to provide an interesting platform to compare the translations rather than to identify a correct or incorrect translation. Translators names are arranged in alphabetic order by their last name. The translators are Abdullah Yusuf Ali,
Zohurul Hoque, T. J. Irving, T.U. Hilali & M. Khan, M. Pickthall, and M.S. Shakir.

DISTORTING ALLAH'S REVELATIONS - AAYAATIL-LAAHI & substantially breaching and violating the holy qur'an per se

Zohurul Hoque: Allah has CERTAINLY turned (mercifully) to the Nabi  .. For He [allah] is towards them most Loving, most Rewarding --innahu bihim raoofur raheem.

Zohurul Hoque: 9:128. Now there had indeed come to you a Rasul from among you - [anfusikum -- your selves/souls, navali]; it is hard on him what afflicts you, he is most  solicitous of you; to the believers very compassionate, very kind -- raoofur raheem

do these 2 translations [SHAKIR & Dr. Zohurul Hoque] reflect allah's explicit command and guidance in this respect?  will they then, teach allah something that he did not know himself? please feel free to compare verses 4:80; 8:17 and 48:10 as well, and you be the judge.

unfortunately, this is how far they have gone to distort the 'word of allah'. please note that this is not a typical example by any means whatsoever.

(References:- Mahmud bin Umar Zamakhshari in al Khashshaf; Fakhr al Din al Razi in Tafsir Kabir; Jalal al Din al Suyuti in Tafsir Durr al Manthur; Tafsir Baydawi; Tafsir Nafsi; Tafsir Ibna Kathir; Sahih al Muslim and Sahih al Tirmidhi.)

A very large number of Muslims (and also nonmuslims) witnessed the   contest and came to know that Ali, Fatimah, Hasan and Husayn were the "Ahlul Bayt" addressed in verse 33 of al Ahzab, known as ayah al tat-hir or the verse of purification.

In this verse, the divine command allows the Holy prophet to take with him "sons", "women" and "selves"; therefore, had there been "women" and "selves" worthy to be selected for this symbolic contest, among his companions, he would certainly have selected them, but as it was seen by one and all, only Fatimah and Ali (and their two sons) were chosen, because none of the anxiously waiting companions (among whom were the three caliphs and the wives of the Holy Prophet) was truthful or so thoroughly purified as to deserve selection for an event which was divinely decreed in order to also make known the true successors of the Holy Prophet.

The word anfus is the plural of nafs which means soul or self. When used in relation to an individual, it implies another being of the same identity with complete unity in equality; therefore, one is the true reflection of the other in thought, action and status, to the extent that at any occasion or for any purpose, any one of them can represent the other. Even if the word nafs is interpreted as "the people", it is clear that Ali alone is "the people" of the Holy Prophet.

=

the point being? when allah says in the holy qur'an that he had 'raised a rasul from among you, yourselves/themselves or your/their souls, etc., -- HE MEANS FROM AMONG THE 'AHL AL-BAIYT' -- 'PEOPLE OF THE HOUSEHOLD' OF ABRAHAM [pbuth] and not from among the pagan and idolatrous arabs of the time.

002.128 Rabbana waijAAalna muslimayni laka wamin thurriyyatina ommatan muslimatan laka waarina manasikana watub AAalayna innaka anta alttawwabu alrraheemu - 2:128. Our Lord! And make us submissive unto Thee and of our seed a nation submissive unto Thee, and show us our ways of worship, and relent toward us. Lo! Thou, only Thou, art the Relenting, the Merciful. 2:129. Our Lord! And raise up in their midst a messenger from among them who shall recite unto them Thy revelations, and shall instruct them in the Scripture and in wisdom and shall purify them. Lo! Thou, only Thou, art the Mighty, Wise. 2:130. And who forsaketh the religion of Abraham [IMAM 2:124] save him who befooleth himself [HIS SOUL--NAFSAH]? Verily We chose him in the world, and lo! in the Hereafter he is among the righteous. Pickthal's Quran Translation

please note that the holy prophet muhammad and his own holy ahl-al baiyt were/ARE from this holy household [pbuth] only.

now will a muslim be purified by simply following or reading the 'MESSAGES' of the scripture alone? let him/her prove it from the holy qur'an only.

please note that the issue of 'PURIFICATION' IN ISLAM and the holy qur'an is directly LINKED to 'Allah's Aayaats--Revelations or Signs.' therefore, one has to do a little more than just read the 'MESSAGES' of the scripture.

proof

SHAKIR:  and Allah has revealed to you the Book and the wisdom, and He has taught you what you did not know, and Allah's grace on you is very great. 004.113  waanzala Allahu AAalayka alkitaba wa alhikmata wa AAallamaka ma lam takun taAAlamu wakana fadlu Allahi AAalayka AAatheeman Zohurul Hoque:  And Allah has revealed to you the Scripture, and the Wisdom, and taught you what you were not knowing. And Allah's grace on you is ever great.

did this scripture text speak of 'allah's aayaats - his/our revelations' and 'purification' in any sense of the term? now, compare verses HQ: 2:129,151; 3:164 and 62:1-3, etc.,  with the one just quoted and note the explicit difference between them.

in short, by reading or reciting 'ONLY THE MESSAGES' of the scripture and/or 'ONLY THE MESSAGES OF ALLAH' -- a muslim may not be 'PURIFIED' in the divine sense of the term. a muslim has to do much more than just read or recite the 'MESSAGES' of the scripture and/or the 'MESSAGES' of allah.

QUESTION

how will a muslim ever find out the truth or even know the difference from an inaccurate translation, WHICH, claims to be
'Very accurate translation'  of the original arabic text of the holy qur'an?

did you know that the christian scholars, editors, revisers and publishers of the so-called 'holy' bible make similar claims in this day and age? however, only the reality is different.

rest assured, we have encountered a similar situation in the islamic world today. not that it is a typical or unique example by any means. far from it. sadly enough, the contemporary muslim scholars and our brethren are doing just fine in this regard without a shadow of the doubt.

the following conclusion was arrived at after a cursory reading only. and the evidence keeps on mounting as does my anxiety.

i regret to say that dr. zohurul hoque [a devout sunni], had followed shakir’s [a shia], translation more faithfully than any other translation in his possession for the task he had voluntarily undertaken when he did.  please note that the transliteration quoted herein is perhaps as poor as the english rendition itself but frankly, what choice do we have?

very powerful and unequivocal criticism

Comparison of first ten ayats of Surah Al-Baqarah against the translation by Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Text in light green background are Dr. Zohurul Hoque's translation

Text in light brown background are late Abdullah Yusuf Ali's translation as published by King Fahd Holy Qur-an Printing Complex, Saudi Arabia. Inaccurate or incorrect translations have been highlighted in red color.

Text in page background are comments as to why Abdullah Yusuf Ali's translation is deemed inaccurate or incorrect.

Comments:
1. La raiba means there is "no doubt"; Fihi means "in it". So the correct translation is "there is no doubt in it".
Yusuf Ali has translated it as "sure, without doubt". The translation does not conform to the Arabic wordings.

2. Li means "for"; al-Muttaqin means "the reverent". The word has been used as a Noun in Passive Participle. So the correct translation is "for the reverent".
In Yusuf Ali's translation, "To those who fear Allah", he has not only inserted the word "Allah" as extra, but also converted the Noun into a Verb. The Arabic of "To those who fear Allah" is "li-lladhina yakhshauna-llaha".

Comments:
Yuqimuna means "(those who) establish". It is in Present Continuous tense. The correct translation of Yuqimunas Salata is "(those who) establish the Salat".
In Yusuf Ali's translation, use of the words "are steadfast" is Passive Participle or "'Maf'ul" in Arabic grammar. Therefore the translation is grammatically incorrect.

Comments:
Ma means "what"; Unjila means "was revealed" (the verb is Majhul or in Passive Voice); Min qablika means "before you", or could also be without accuracy, "before your time". So the correct translation is "what was revealed before you".
Therefore Yusuf Ali's translation "sent before thy time", does not conform to Arabic words.
Hum means "they"; Yuqinun means "firmly believe" or "believe resolutely". So the correct translation is "they firmly believe". Yusuf Ali's translation has lost the link with the Arabic wordings.

Comments:
Ula'ika means "these" or "those", but not necessarily "they"; 'Ala means "on", or 'upon"; Huda means "guidance". So the correct translation is "These are upon Guidance".
In Yusuf Ali's translation, putting the words (true guidance) within parenthesis has made the translation incorrect.

Al-muflihun means "the successful". The word is a Noun and used in Passive Participle or Maf'ul. I
n Yusuf Ali's translation, "will prosper", the word has been used as a Verb in Future Indefinite tense, so it is grammatically incorrect.

Comparison of first section of Surah As-Saba' against the translation of Drs. Al-Hilali and Khan.

Text in light green background are Dr. Zohurul Hoque's translation

Text in light brown background are Dr. Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali and Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan's translation as published by King Fahd Holy Qur-an Printing Complex, Saudi Arabia. Inaccurate or incorrect translations have been highlighted in red color.

Text in page background are comments as to why Drs. Al-Hilali and Khan's translation is deemed inaccurate or incorrect.

Comments:
'Al-hamdu' means "all praise". Drs. Hilali & Khan have translated it as; "All the praises and thanks".
In their translation Drs. Hilali & Khan added the words "and thanks" which are not there in the Ayat. So the translation is not correct. In 'Lahul hamdu', the word 'lahu' means "to Him", and 'al-hamdu' means "all praise". So its correct translation is "to Him belongs all praise". Drs. Hilali & Khan have added in their translation the words "and thanks" which are not there in the Ayat.

Comments:
In 'Maa yaliju', the word 'maa' means "what", 'yaliju' means "flees" or "goes into". Its correct translation in the context is "what penetrates". Drs. Hilali & Khan have translated it as "that which goes", which in Arabic becomes 'alladhi yaliju'. Though the translation may not be called wrong,
yet it is inaccurate. In 'Maa yakhruju', the word 'maa' means "what". Drs. Hilali & Khan translated this word as 'that which", and in Arabic it becomes 'alladhi yakhruju'. So the translation is inaccurate. In 'Maa yanzilu', and 'Maa ya'ruju', the translations, on the same reason as above, are inaccurate.

Comments:
In 'Wa qaala', Drs. Hilali & Khan have translated this as: "Those .... say". They omitted the word 'wa' meaning "'and" in their translation. In 'La-ta'tiyannakum', the letter 'la' indicates 'certainty', and the verb is also emphatic in application. So its correct translation is: "it will certainly come to you". In Drs. Hilali & Khan's translation: "it will come to you", they have omitted the letter 'la' and missed the emphasis on certainty of the verb. In 'Laa ya'zubu', the word 'laa' indicated 'negation', and 'Ya'zubu' means 'it hides'. So its correct translation is "it cannot hide".
In Drs. Hilali & Khan's translation "not even escapes", they have added the word "even" which is not there in the Arabic text. The word 'Anhu' means "from Him". Drs. Hilali & Khan translated it as: "from His knowledge". The word 'knowledge' does not exist in the Ayat.

Comments:
In 'Amilus saalihaat', the word 'amilu' means "they do", 'saalihaat' means "good (in plural number)". So the words mean: "they do good". Drs. Hilali & Khan translated it as: "do righteous good deeds".
Addition of the words "righteous" and "deeds" made the translation wrong.

what should any faithful muslim expect FROM such a critique?

for writing this book of mine, i have consulted particularly the works of the following translators of the holy qur'an. please note that the word/phrase -- at this juncture in the holy qur'an reads 'ILyasIN' and not  just ilyas, as we have it in the earlier verse and/or the bible! and this CHANGES the whole context and connotation of allah's command and revelation.

In connection with the verses praising the Ahl ul Bayt, Ibn Hajar has written verse 130 as the third verse in the eleventh chapter of his book Sawa-iq al Muhriqah and has stated therein on the authority of Ibn Abbas that
"ALI YASIN" (OR IL YASIN) MEANS ALI MUHAMMAD. He writes that Kalbi also holds the same view. Fakhr al Din al Razi writes that the AHL UL BAYT are at par with the Holy Prophet in five things:

(i) In salutation, for Allah said: "Peace be to you, O prophet."  and He also said: "Peace be to the ALI YASIN."

Salaamun (peace) be upon Ilyâsîn (Elias)

The reading of aayah 130 as    carries the meaning of the family of Yaseen (he and those who followed him), which in the tafseer of Ibn Katheer is stated to be another name for Ilyaas, who is also thought to be the same as Idrees; or as the tafseer also states that the father of Ilyaas was Yaseen, so that the family of Yaseen includes the father.  Those that read it this way consider the  to be one word and to be another word.

not only was dr. Zohurul Hoque totally unaware of this unique qur'anic condition, but also this is precisely the result one may expect on a personal and spiritual level by following his edition under review.

under the same contest, which word in the 'Ayat-ul-Kursî--SEAT'  or any other verse pertaining to allah's throne --  led him to believe that  allah's throne is, 'the throne of power'?

T. J. Irving:

His Seat extends far over Heaven and Earth;

Zohurul Hoque: Allah – there is no deity but He, the Everliving, the Self - subsisting. slumber does not overtake Him nor sleep; to Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth; who is he that can in his presence except with his authority? SEE HOW CLEAR IS THE DISTINCTION IN THE HOLY QUR'AN ITSELF?

and now please consider the following, which had also suffered a similar fate at his hands, all in the name of piety and preservation of the holy qur'an in its pristine purity.

YUSUFALI: For this was obviously a trial-

PICKTHAL: Lo! that verily was a clear test.

SHAKIR: Most surely this is a MANIFEST TRIAL.

Zohurul Hoque:  ‘truly this – this indeed is an obvious trial.

SHAKIR: So you did not slay them, but it was Allah Who slew them, and you did not smite when you smote (the enemy), but it was Allah Who smote, and that He might confer upon the believers a good gift from Himself; surely Allah is Hearing, Knowing. [pp. 161 ]

Zohurul Hoque: therefore, you did not slay them, but Allah slew them, and you did not smite when you smite but Allah smote, and in order that He might confer upon the believers a good favor from Himself. Allah is certainly all-Hearing, all-Knowing. [pp. 292]

YUSUFALI: It is not ye who slew them; it was Allah: when thou threwest (a handful of dust), it was not thy act, but Allah's: in order that He might test

the Believers by a gracious trial from Himself: for Allah is He Who heareth and knoweth (all things).

PICKTHAL: Ye (Muslims) slew them not, but Allah slew them. And thou (Muhammad)

threwest not when thou didst throw, but Allah threw, that He might test the believers by a fair test from Him. Lo! Allah is Hearer, Knower.

YUSUFALI: Say: "My Lord hath commanded justice; and that ye set your whole selves (to Him) at every time and place of prayer, and call upon Him, making

your devotion sincere as in His sight: such as He created you in the beginning,

so shall ye return."

PICKTHAL: Say: My Lord enjoineth justice. And set your faces upright (toward

‘INDA KULLI MASJIDIN’ --  Zohurul Hoque:  TRANSLATION #2 OF THE SAME QUR’ANIC PHRASE - 'AT EVERY OCCASION OF PROSTRATION' - [pp. 251].

YUSUFALI: O Children of Adam! wear your beautiful apparel at every time and place of prayer: eat and drink: But waste not by excess, for Allah loveth not the wasters.

PICKTHAL: O Children of Adam! Look to your adornment at every place of worship,

and eat and drink, but be not prodigal. Lo! He loveth not the prodigals.

although, the late rashad khalifa was a satanic individual of the highest order and distorter of the holy qur’an, rest assured, he translated some aspect of the same correctly.

on the other hand, please be warned that most of the contemporary sunni editors and publishers of the holy qur'an in english texts have literally, like their christian counterparts, started to corrupt the same.

not only have i encountered this major problem and difficulty repeatedly but also i am afraid with all the saudi wahhabi innovations around us and these deliberate corruptions [saudi corruptions included], etc., it may not be too long before our own muslim youths and others - misinformed or unsuspecting muslim adults are forced to give up islam for other religions. rest assured, these innovations and corruptions will come back to haunt us and our future generations, not to speak of what it'll do to our spiritual lives both here and in the hereafter.

'MUBIIN' -- 'manifest & revealed'

The same word had also been used for the HOLY QUR’AN, with the SAME SINGLE/SINGULAR MEANING.  [15:1; 36:69].

  • As too, for the ‘NOORUM MUBIIN’ -- the 'MANIFEST LIGHT.' [4:175].

allah used the same word for his chief adversary. note the difference in the following 2 verses.  this example shows the importance of the qur'anic word viz., 'MUBIIN.'  in other words, shaytan--satan is not an abstract entity at all.

although he can appear and disappear at will, the very fact that he is allah's creation [good in the beginning], - makes him a thing -- 'and everything-wa kulla shay-in' -- in the qur'anic context is 'mubiin--manifest.'

compare

The human adversary had been described in a similar context too. They were both in error ‘MANIFEST.’  Their straying and loss is also denoted as ‘MUBIIN’ – i.e., DIRECTED mainly towards THEIR failure to  RECOGNIZE and/or DENY  the HIGHER AND THE HIGHEST ‘MUBIIN’.

  فَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ إِنَّكَ عَلَى الْحَقِّ الْمُبِينِ [g]
[a]
fatawakkal `ala allāhi innaka `ala alĥaqqi almubīni
27:79. So put thy trust in allah: for thou art on manifest Truth.

[this is by far the best transliteration of the holy qur'an on the internet]

BOTH the rasul [SAS] and the human being were the exact and perfect meanings of the word, ‘MUBIIN-MANIFEST.’  Both were MANIFEST and/or REVEALED. They were TANGIBLE OBJECTS and not some abstract entities.

in other words, in all these cases, the MEANING of the word ‘MUBIIN’ – was single/singular without a shadow of the doubt.

  • KHALIFA: O you who believe, reverence GOD and utter only the correct utterances.

although the Holy Qur'an was very clear in its primary purport, our muslim scholars have given it a variety of meanings. The EXTENT of their verbosity knows no limit. Each  translator was/is trying to out do the other and, in the process had ONLY SUCCEEDED IN DISTORTING the divine message and meaning of the holy qur’an.

shakir: but those who were unjust changed it for a saying other than that which had been spoken to them, so we sent upon those who were unjust a pestilence from heaven, because they transgressed.

Zohurul Hoque:  But those who were unjust changed this saying, different from what had been said to them; so We sent down upon those who did wrong a pestilence from above, because they had been transgressing.

Note: allah says that the ‘WORD--QAWLA was changed. The ‘WORD’ in this case, had that very special and unique connotation and significance in ISLAM, as may be deduced from the following verses.

3705. This part of the Sūra is considered a prophecy. It may refer to the conquest of Khaibar. _Khaibar is a Harrat or volcanic tract, well-watered with many springs issuing from its basaltic rocks. It has a good irrigation system and produces good harvests of grain and dates in its wet valleys, while the outcrop of rocks in the high ground affords sites for numerous fortresses. In the holy Prophet's time there were Jewish colonies settled here, but they were a source of constant trouble especially after Siege of Madinah. It became a nest of all the hostile Jewish elements expelled for their treachery from elsewhere. Its capital, Khaibar, is about 90 miles due north of Madinah. Its inhabitants offered some resistance, and Hadhrat 'Ali, though he had just risen from a bed of illness, performed prodigies of valour. After its surrender, a land settlement was made, which retained the cultivators of the soil on the land, but brought them under control, so that no further focus of active hostility should remain near Madinah. The terms of the settlement will be found in Waqidi.

other than what was obvious in the holy qur'an per se, dr. zohurul hoque had made absolutely NO PROVISION FOR THE AAYAATS THAT WERE ALSO PRESENT IN THE 'HUMAN FORM' OR 'PERSONIFICATION' OF 'ALLAH'S AAYAATS & RAHMAH--MERCY.'  see 19:54; 21:107.

remember, the holy prophet muhammad [sas] was repeatedly referred to as 'MUBIIN'. he was also asked to DECLARE -- proclaim THE 'MUBIIN.'  see 5:92; 24:54; 36:17.

hence, the other 'aayaats' and/or the 'MANIFEST PROOFS that were CLEARLY revealed with the holy qur'an  and al-furqan  during the month of RAMADAN also fell in the same category. see HQ: 2:185; 6:48-57,103-107; 40:50,62-63,66-70, etc.

'his ayats - revelations and purify them'

2.106:
C107. The word which I have translated by the word
"revelations" is Ayat. See C.41 and n. 15. It is not only used for verses of the Quran, but in a general sense for God's revelations, as in ii. 39 and for other Signs of God in history or nature, or miracles, as in ii. 61. It has even been used for human signs and tokens of wonder, as, for example, monuments or landmarks built by the ancient people of AD (xxvi. 128). What is the meaning here? If we take it in a general sense, it means that God's Message from age to age is always the same, but that its form may differ according to the needs and exigencies of the time. That form was different as given to Moses and then to Jesus and then to Muhammad. Some commentators apply it also to the Ayat of the Quran. There is nothing derogatory in this if we believe in progressive revelation. In iii. 7 we are told distinctly about the Quran, that some of its versus are basic or fundamental, and others are allegorical, and it is mischievous to treat the allegorical verses and follow them (literally). On the other hand, it is absurd to treat such a verse as ii. 115 as if it were abrograted by ii. 144 about the Qibla. We turn to the Qibla, but we do not believe that God is only in one place. He is everywhere. See second note to ii. 144. Yusuf Ali's Commentary from QuranTrans

reminder:  will a muslim be purified by following or reading the 'messages of the scripture' alone? let him/her prove it from the holy qur'an only.

please note that issue of 'PURIFICATION' IN ISLAM and the holy qur'an is directly LINKED to 'Allah's Aayaats--Revelations or Signs'. therefore, one has to do a little more than just read the 'messages' of the scripture.
