Now it is time for us to begin to give some well deserved credit to the Veterans of the 28th Thomas' Louisiana Infantry Regiment.
This section of my web site is devoted to the "common soldier" who, when his new nation called upon him to defend his homeland from aggression, responded with a resounding desire to do what was asked of him. He followed his leaders into battle, endured unimaginable hardships, suffered horrible wounds, the worst of battlefield conditions, little if any rations and supplies. Many were without even the basic necessities such as a uniform or shoes. Yet, he did his part, answered the call and stood tall. Many of these men did not return...while many did with wounds that disfigured them for life. But each man did his duty...answered the call, and when faced with insurmountable odds, stood up and was counted! For he was but...a simple soldier.

A poignant statement issued by Brigadier-General F. A. Shoup, which was dated, 8 July 1863 (Vicksburg, Miss.) gives a small measure of insight into the suffering that these gallent men endured...
"July 4: Capitualation ordered. At 10 A.M. we moved out of the trenches by battalion, stacked arms, and then returned to our old quarters in town. Then men were full of indignation. Though they have had very scant faire, and had been exposed to a merciless and almost continuous fire, remained at their post in the trenches without relief, I have rarely heard a murmur or complaint. The tone has always been "This is pretty hard, but we can stand it." Too much praise cannot be given to officers and men."
As time progresses...look to this section of my web site for others who will follow and be "recognized" for their efforts.
