Additional Information (5 July 1998): The Doremus Family arrived in this country from Holland about 1685. Edward Peter Doremus was born in 1832 and he was by trade a dentist before and after the war. His brother, Augustus Boyd Doremus was born in 1841 and became a dentist after the war. A check of the Confederate Pension Applications on file at the Archives in Baton Rouge reveal no pension applications on file for either brother. Both brothers migrated to California after the war. There is a S.C.V. Camp #1631 named after Augustus Boyd Doremus. Augustus Boyd is buried in Santa Barba. Edward Peter also died in California and is buried there -- exact location not known.

This information is supplied by the submitter, Randy Davis. It appears that an application for Confederate pension benefits is on file at the Archives in Baton Rouge in the name of George Woodward. However the middle initial is listed as "L".

With said soilder (sic) and finished there (sic) survice (sic) at the close of the war at which they received there (sic) Discharges or Furloes (sic) at Bayou Chicout, and came home to gather...Witness: Signed, J Gilbert, L. N. Bailey, Joseph Robins, Edval Sonier by his mark. Sworn to and subscribed before me, this 22th day of July 1914 A. He married a Celeste ---, about 1855. He later married Emelia CORMIER in 1868. He survived the war and passed away on 4 October 1902. He is laid to rest in Rayne, Acadia Parish, Louisiana. Civilian Data: (5 September 2000) Adolphe Fall was married to Coralie Leger on 10 January 1859 in Grand Coteau, Louisiana. Children were born to this marriage, but the names and number are unspecified. Adolphe survived the war and passed away on 1 October 1871 as a result of Conjestive Chills. He is laid to rest in Grand Coteau. Coralie LEGER never remarried after the death of Adolphe. A Confederate pension application for Coralie Leger Fall , the widow of Adolphe Fall (Faul), is on file at the Archives in Baton Rouge. Civilian Data: (5 September 2000) Valmont Fall was born in Louisiana. He was married twice and nine childred were born as a result of these two marriages. He died October 24, 1862, at the Regimental Hospital, Warren, Mississippi and he is most likely buried in Warren, Mississippi, just south of Vicksburg. There apparently is no application for a Confederate pension on file at the Archives in Baton Rouge.

Civilian Data: (7 September 2000) Doctor Solomon Hyatt was married on December 2, 1865 in Jasper, Texas to Nancy Emily HOOSIER. This union produced some nine issues. He survived the war and was a farmer by trade. He lived for a period of time in Texas. He passed away on February 26, 1907 at Windham Creek, Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana and is laid to rest in the Hyatt family cemetery in Fields, Louisiana. His wife lived until February 19, 1919 and is buried at the same place. An application for a widow's Confederate pension benefits is on file at the Archives in Baton Rouge. Civilian Data: (7 September 2000) Elias Marion Hyatt was born on 16 February 1838 in Wayne County, Mississippi. He was married in July 1866 in Newton, Texas to Mary Ann HOOSIER, who may be the sister of Doctor Solomon's wife. Apparently there was but one child born to this marriage. Elias Marion was a farmer by trade. It is beleived that his wife passed away before him and that he may have lived until about 1885. He is laid to rest at the Hyatt family cemetery in Fields, Louisiana. Civilian Data: (7 September 2000) Jasper Newton Hyatt was born on 22 September 1842 in Wayne County, Mississippi or in Wash--- County, Alabama. Jasper Newton married Martha Louise JACOBS in Newton, Texas on June 6, 1864. This marriage produced some eight children, all who were born after the war. He was a farmer by trade and passed away on 23 June 1909. Jasper Newton is laid to rest at the Hyatt family cemetery in Fields, Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana. There is an application for Confederate widow's benefits on file at the Archives in Baton Rouge. Additional Information: (9 August 2001) -- John Johnson was married to Adelaide GUIDRY on 1 November 1853. This union produced at least one child: Philomene Johnson. According to the muster rolls, John Johnson did not survive the war have been wounded while serving on the C. S. S. Ram Arkansas during the Vicksburg campaign. He was wounded and is reported to have died of his wounds at Vicksburg at Mrs. Cox's Hospital. He is laid to rest at Cedar Hill Cemetery, in Warren County, Vicksburg, Mississippi. His widow, Adelaide, eventually applied for a Confederate Widow's Pension and according to records, there is an application containing three pages on file at the Archives in Baton Rouge.

Civilian Data: (19 September 2000) Andre Young was born on 18 August 1832. He married Lavinia YOUNG, who was born on 19 May 1840. They were married about 1857. The children born to this marriage are: Susan Young, born about 1858, Josephine Young born 27 August 1860, Joseph H. Young born 21 March 1862, Mary Emily Young born 2 April 1864, 1864 in Sugartown, LA., Oscar Jefferson Young born 25 November 1866, *Ezra Young born 29 November 1871 in Eunice, LA., who married Bazilide Doguet who was born 23 October 1872. They were married on 9 December 1895 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Acadia Parish, Louisiana. Monroe Young born Abt. 1873 and Jasper Young born 28 December 1876. Andre joined Co. A., of the 28th Thomas' Louisiana Infantry Regiment, but there is no existing service record listed in Booth's Records. However, in the Archives in Baton Rouge, there is a pension application for Confederate Benefits in the name of Andre/Andrew Young and this is believed to be our man. Andre survived the war and passed away on 3 March 1920. He is laid to rest in the Simmons Cemetery, in Mittie, Allen Parish, Louisiana. There are two headstones marking his final resting place. The C.S.A. headstone reads "Andre Young, Pvt. Co. A 28 LA Inf, Aug 18, 1832, Mar 3, 1920". His original tombstone reads, "Andre Young, Husband of Louvenia Young, Born Aug. 18, 1832, Died Mar 3, 1920, Gone But Not Forgotten". "Louvenia" Young, his wife, is buried at the "old Young" homeplace, near Mittie, with her father, Julian LeJeune/Young. Her tombstone reads, "Lavinia Young. Wife of Andrew Young. Born May 19, 1840. Died Oct. 30, 1881. She Died As She Lived, Trusting In God". Across the top of her tombstone there are two hands, shaking. * Ezra and Bazilide are the Great Grandparents of the submitter, Kathy Lavinia Brown.

Young, Jesse Hypolite, Pvt. Co. A, 28th (Thomas') La. Inf. En. Opelousas, La., April 6, 1862. Present on all Rolls to Feb., 1863. Federal Rolls of Prisoners of War, Captured and paroled Vicksburg, Miss., July 4, 1863. According to the Application for Confederate Benefits on file at the Archives in Baton Rouge, Jesse Young was wounded at the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou,"... he lost his right eye when a gun cap exploded during the battle at Chicksaw Bayou." jlr
Civilian Data: (31 July 2001) Jesse Hypolite Young was born on December 11, 1845 in Calcasieu Parish. His address on his Confederate pension application is "Berwick, Acadia Parish, Louisiana." The Louisiana Archives in Baton Rouge have microfilmed records including a pension application from Jesse "P." Young which states that he lost his right eye when a gun cap exploded during the battle at Chicksaw Bayou. He is listed among those surrendered July 4, 1863 and paroled July 7, 1863 from Vicksburg. According to John Young's book, Jesse married Marie REED May 8, 1866 and they had 9 children. He was a farmer after the war. He and his wife Marie are buried in Berwick(sic), aka Ardoin, Cemetery south of Basile, Louisiana. Redich is more likely the correct location rather than Berwick which is near Morgan City. Jesse's third son Joseph Hebert, or possibly Herbert, Young is the father of the contributors grandfather Herbert Adam Young who died February 22, 1942. The contributors father, Herbert Francis Young, resides in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. The contributor of this essay resides near Birmingham, Alabama.
